Blocking/parrying based on weapon collision box or not?
Love the game, recently had time to get back into it and defeated Janus. But I'm still unsure of what the blocking/parrying is based off?

At first I thought it was purely based off a hemisphere in the direction I was looking, so I try to centre things, but then I keep subconsciously thinking its based off mine and the enemies weapon model collision box and adjust accordingly.

When Janus goes into his final phase of low level sweeps I was completely confused what I should be blocking at for the blockable attacks - especially as he has a habit of getting right into your body. So it just felt completely random, and I ended up having to dodge away instead all the time.

Timing is everything. Janus' final phase sweeps are hard, because of the long startup animations. You have to wait for the frames where the attack would deal damage to you, be in range for him, and in your parry frames. Your parry frames are shown by the crossed weapons crosshair.
I recommend you parry him with the spear, as those have the longest parry window, and very forgiving in this fight.

Thanks but that's not what I am asking - I already had beaten him with the spear. It's not the timing I am unsure of, but the orientation and if that is based on weapon hit box location or simply player and enemy orientation.

And it's super irritating not knowing how this combat system is supposed to work when reaching that magician boss on the tower with his laser beam, and having to fight the other multiple enemies at the same time (Also on that boss... having to fully reascend that long ramp every time you die is super annoying).

Is it purely based off weapon hit box position or the direction you or the enemy are facing?

Hi, thanks for the question. I'll try to clarify.
As granto mentioned, you have to trigger parrying so that the attack fits in the timeframe indicated by the two crossed swords. You can parry and block the incoming attacks in about 120 degrees zone centered on your view, so yeah, you have to be facing them more or less.

Awesome, thanks for clarifying this! It greatly helps me with the mental model of fairness and consistency within the game. Especially when dealing with multiple opponents.

I'm really enjoying the game apart from the current top of tower boss (and having to retread that long spiral ramp while I suck at that part), and sometimes the ranged guys can feel a bit extreme. I also seem to have become a master at getting 'script kiddie' achievements by accident in it though lol.

The game is severely underrated by mainstream press, and really deserves to be a bigger success.

You'll eventually get the ability to deflect projectiles when you develop your speed skill. If you keep your timing right, you can flip back their shots. That yields some advantage in ranged combat and gives you some way of fighting from the distance.

We didn't really get much media exposure at the time of release. The story of Elderborn is a peculiar one and the development was a bumpy ride. Early access didn't get much attention and the release wasn't picked up by the media all that much.

Thanks for the kind words. It was YOU guys, the community who helped us get to where we are now. We keep on developing games for you and we don't even think of stopping. And you bet that the new stuff we're developing is gonna be built on your feedback. We always hear you and do our best to improve our games according to what you guys say.

Yeah, it´s a real shame...I discovered your game through Gman (like many other games). Your game is a treat!

I discovered this via Gman too. The top of tower battles definitely get more fun after the first. I am having trouble putting it down now:

Every time we watch somebody's playing ELDERBORN, we're amazed by the diversity of approach to weapons, taking on enemies, movement, that players present. And so it is here. Seems like there's a little bit for somebody in ELDERBORN.

I personally didn't use ceramic khopesh all that much and I found it difficult to handle. Couldn't fit it into my playstyle all that much. But watching your balance with that blade makes me think I still got some stuff to learn about the game. Thanks for posting!
