Planets tend to be good sources of fuel, but avoid windy planets or high-mass planets. It's almost always a net loss going to planets like those.
And also make use of secret paths. The only two reliable methods I can describe are looking for 3 potted plants on planets; once you find the third one (they aren't necessarily all in the same system; you're kinda lucky if you find more than 1 in the same system) it will unlock a path. You can also look for signposts. If you know what you're looking for, they're surprisingly easy to spot if you happen to be close enough to one (and have good eyes...). Each of these secret paths can help you save a lot of fuel since you don't have to spend it weaving in and arround asteroid fields, and the planets are usually littered with little artifacts that give you small amounts of fuel (fruits, coins, etc., usually 1 fuel apiece, with 4 or 5 on a planet).
All in all, it boils down to roleplaying as Scrooge McDuck when it comes to fuel. Also, watch out for the last couple of levels... if you're not careful, they can be a little nasty.
Sometimes it is good to visit certain planets close to asteroid belts immediately after entering the system, before asteroids are thrown into a chaos and start ramming the planets.
Also, if high velocity planets are travelling in opposite direction compared to the asteroid fields, one may opt to wait before all asteroids have been blown to bits before landing on such a planet.
Just had a run ended by this very misadventure!
Landed, jumped out of my ship, walked a short distance, jumped over an obstacle, and a low flying asteroid promptly splattered me into the next dimension.
I was indeed being a greedy completionist; it was the final sector, and my Z-drive was already fully changed, I was just scouting for points & unlocks :(
