L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files

ERROR: "L.A. Noire: The Case Files exited unexpectedly"
WARNING !!
IF YOU ARE HAVING TECHNICAL ISSUES, REQUEST REFUND SOON AS POSSIBLE! ROCKSTAR WILL NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT AND WOULD RATHER STEAL YOUR MONEY.

Update: [Mar 1 2018]
I submitted a support ticket way back in novemeber 2017 because their game wouldn't even start. Support treated me like a child then ignored my ticket after I kindly asked for real technical support. Months later after jerking me around and telling me they would elevate my support ticket, they have instead closed it. They just span me around in circles until my refund period ran out.

If you want to support pro-consumerism please consider not buying this title or other rockstar titles. BOYCOTT, Don't support a company that doesn't care about the quality of your consumer experience.

{CURRENTLY UNRESOLVED} [Nov2017]
I was waiting so patiently for this game to release and was extremely sadden when this error prevented me from playing. ('`>_O) ERROR: "L.A. Noire: The Case Files exited unexpectedly"

If you’re experiencing the same issue I know how it must feel and sadly RockStar Games has not officially recognized the issue.

So I encourage you to go to their support website and submit a support ticket detailing your problem.
https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

I created a support ticket on December 15, 2017, and these currently are what I have been asked to do by Tier 1 support. I would advise you try them yourselves before you creating your own ticket just to save everyone time.

  1. Check your computer Meets their Minimum System Requirements[support.rockstargames.com]
  2. These are Installed: DirectX 9 (June 2010) MS Visual C++ 2012 and 2015 Redistributable Packages
  3. Graphics card has up to date drivers
  4. Install Latest version of Social Club [patches.rockstargames.com]
  5. Disable all Anti-Virus (Including Windows Defender)
  6. Disable all Firewalls (Including Windows Firewall)
  7. Reduce “User Account Control” Level to “Never Notify me”

Here is my Computer Spec
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 16299) Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU X 990 @ 3.47GHz (12 CPUs), ~3.5GHz Memory: 40950MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 12 Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Headset: HTC VIVE

An alternative thing I have tried is putting some settings.ini file in
“.\Documents\Rockstar Games\L.A. Noire VR\settings.ini”
This did not resolve the issue either.

Please share your experiences Below,
GoodLuck!

The reason the OP's system would not run the game is simple, his processor does not support the AVX instruction set which is a requirement as Rockstar have compiled the game with the AVX switch enabled, although the original flat screen game did not use AVX.

As soon as the game calls an AVX instruction it will crash as the processor doesn't recognize it.

I know it's an old thread but just in case anyone else gets the error: "L.A. Noire: The Case Files exited unexpectedly" you might want to check your processor.

Although I highlighted this to Rockstar at the time I had the issue they expressed no interest in issuing a non AVX version or gave any reasoning as to why AVX was required (which from my understanding is normally where the program uses floating point-intensive calculations). As the vast majority of VR games are not compiled using AVX I'm guessing the benefit for most game engines is minimal. One exception however appears to be voxel based engines.

I did all of that, among others things too, but it did not worked in the end. i went for for a refund . wil maybe buy again if the problem is solved
I think I have a solution. I have this issue on my laptop where it was trying to use the integrated graphics card instead of my 1070.

1) Open your Nvidia Control Panel
2) Go to manage 3D settings and then select the Program Settings tab
3) Wait for the drop down list to populate and select LA Noire VR from the list. If it is not in the list click add and find the LA Noire executable.
4) Under the Select Prefered Graphics card drop down select you Nvidia Card
5) Save and close and try LA Noire again
I don't see a "Prefered Grpahics Card" dropdown, but that could be because I have a dedicated graphic card not intergrated?

Probably. I guess in my case it was using the integrated instead of the dedicated card.
I am having this issue did any find a solution. I have a dedicated graphics card so that not the issue.
The last commuinication I had with rocksgames they asked me delete the game and reinstall it. Obviously that did not work!, I've reinstalled the game dozens of times over now.

It is fairly odd and almost insulting that I've been put through a loop of oxymoron support. Becuase out of the 20+ VR titles I own, this is the only one that just legit refuses to turn on.

Its almost as bad as Mircosoft support: "Did you restart your computer? did it work? Noo well oh well it's your problem, buy a new PC!".

Eeverytime you deal with support they press me to attach this stupid log file. I've been asked to attach a new log files so many freaking times!! A it's hilarious each time I send them a new log it says the same damn thing EVERY FREAKING TIME, ITS THE SAME!
I'm having the same problem.
I have a solution for the launching problem. (ERROR: "L.A. Noire: The Case Files exited unexpectedly")

Go C:\Users\User\Documents\Rockstar Games\L.A. Noire VR and open settings file.
Change Fullscreen option to "Fullscreen:NO". Then save file*s settings. That's all.

Works for Oculus Rift. Firstly I downloaded the LA Noire Fix for Oculus and then fixed the launching problem with tricks above.

My computer specs: Intel i5-6600K 3.5ghz, Gtx1070, 16gb ram, Win10 Pro 64bit.
You can also check integrity of files. Maybe that might help?
Update:
In December Tier1 supported stated that my issue would be prompted to Tier2 support. Then 3 months go by with my ticket still open, and no response from support at all. Suddenly 3 months later without resolving my issue they have now closed my ticket.

They've jerked me around for 4+ months with my support ricket and it's just unexacaptable. I refuse to spend any more time or money into any future rockstar products!

Could you reopen the ticket?
I had similar situation with this support group but refunded the game after 10 days of stupid and unacceptable answers...
Just submitted my support ticket. I've tried everything... I've never had a game issue kick my ass like this. Usually we get an error code or SOMETHING. This has me officially stumped. I have no idea whats going on with this game.
I opened a support chat, and they had me 1st verify the integrity of the files, which didn't seem to do anything. Then they had me exit out of Steam completely and go to the start menu and right-click on the Steam icon and "run as administrator." THEN the game worked for me! Huge relief, and I hope this might help!
Hey everyone. I just bought the game a couple days ago and I 'had' the same issue, but I found a work-around after searching many threads.

This works for me. I have no idea if it'll work for you but I thought I'd share.

When you turn on steam and plug in your VR Headset, SteamVR kicks on almost automatically. Not all the time, but, usually.

NOTE: This is on my Valve Index. I have no idea about anything Oculus or HTC Vive.

Here's my work-around. Turn off SteamVR, then start the game. After I did that, the error message didn't come up and I was able to play the game just fine. Once the game screen turns on SteamVR will automatically restart itself and everything will work.

The first two minutes are me basically fiddling with files and such getting it to work. 35:25 is where I explain you have to have SteamVR off before you start the game.

I'm gonna make a new thread about this as well and HOPE this is the one-fix-for-all. :D

Thanks! This worked for me. Was trying to play with my Oculus Quest (with Oculus Link), had to manually install Rockstar Game Launcher and log in and then make sure Steam VR was closed when launching the game.
