Did the Steam community "cancel" Dustborn?
I know the term "cancel" as it relates to "cancel culture" means "to withdraw one's support for (someone, such as a celebrity, or something, such as a company) publicly and especially on social media." Would it be accurate to say the Steam community has "cancelled" Dustborn by not buying any copies of the game on Steam or would it be more accurate to characterize the Steam community as "cancelling" Red Thread Games by not buying Dustborn?

Apologies if I missed any context.

If simply not buying something is canceling then every single game that doesn't sell well would be cancelled. I think that would broaden the term to the point of meaninglessness.

No need for any apologies, I think you hit the nail on the head with this one.

That's exactly what happened here. Those that started "cancel culture" are getting cancelled themselves.

i don't know about started... one could argue that organised religion is the original cancel culture

You give the hate brigade to much credit. They never would've bought the game anyway. So it's like when PETA protests KFC, nothing of value was lost. One of the reasons why Dustborn was targeted by grifters is because of the "sacrificial trash" theory. Attack something that people wouldn't defend due to them being indifferent to or outright wouldn't defend. Dustborn is something most people never heard of until grifters made it the flavor of the month and Concord, nobody is going to defend because it's yet another generic hero shooter in an already crowded market where multiple games do the exact same thing, but better and for free. But make it all about some topical culture war nonsense to make it look like the artificial movement is doing something to "defeat wokeness." The intangible enemy that is both weak and strong at the same time. (Where have I heard that before?)

This right here. Trolls trashing the game aren't the target demographic. Literally nothing of value was lost. Also, I think you're absolutely right about Concord. Sure the character designs were pretty ugly, but it's not like Cruelty Squad (a game that is scientifically HIDEOUS, but also a success) doesn't exist. It really is just grifters getting the masses riled up and trolls pouring fuel on the fire by laughing.

Oh, everything was awful about Concord, even the designs. But when a certain group brings up why the designs are bad, they focus on the 3 black characters when all of the cast looked like Mall Cops of the Solar System

nah, thats not how canceling something work.

woke or DEI games can & will sell if they're good.

i played this & saw the gameplay videos. its really not good nor fun TBH.

when making any game, you'll have to at least have some sort-of empathy in order to be able to look at it from the player point of view.

Thanks! I hadn't considered whether there was support to begin with. I think that makes sense here.

This is cope. The steam community came to dance on it's grave. None of us would have bought the game anyway, however we did bring attention to it so it can be argued that we promoted the game to more people that would have potentially bought it. Instead these potential customers just came to shill "the message" in the discussion forums but still didn't buy it.

The game was not cancelled, it just didn't have any market appeal.

Yeah... concord sure had its problems but the main one was slapping that insane price on it where the standard now is free to play lol

but the "woke" trolls are so desperate to be validated the small group of them lurk out of whatever ♥♥♥♥ hole facebook group they hang out in to post on the steam forums like they have won something

And notice how they got quiet about Star Wars Outlaws since it's been selling well and has been getting good reviews.

Yeah, I admit I didn't read Petunia's description as carefully as I should've and applied my own impression about what "cancelling" is (basically that it's when a bunch of people trash on a game). Yeah, these people trashing it were never going to buy it.

Withdrawn support is not cancelling.

Cancelling is doing everything in your power to ruin someone's life by having them fired, by having sponsors drop them, by doxxing them, by lying and gaslighting about them in order to make sure their presence in the public sphere is gone forever.

None of us tried to get these clowns fired, none of us went to the Norwegian government and ask them to drop future support of this deplorable studio, none of us doxxed or mass reported them to Valve.

What we did was meme on them and their abominable excuse for a game.
