SKYBOX VR Video Player

SKYBOX VR Video Player

Can someone explain why we can't play 3d movies direct from Blu-ray?
I have never understood this. I am sure there is some crappy reason with licensing, but it seems to me if we have purchased 3d blurays that we can currently watch on our 3d tv, there should be an easier way to watch in VR, then going through a complex and often frustrating ripping experience. Will we ever have players that allow us to just play the blu-ray directly like we can in our home theater? Sorry if this is a noob question. I would just like a complete answer from someone who understands. Surely at some point this will come. If it existed now, 3d movies would start selling like crazy to VR users, and likely would encourage many to adopt VR who are not as interested in the gaming. The VR industry would win, and the movie companies would win.

same. But i can't even get Skybox to see all my videos on my external ssd drive, so this is like asking for a moon landing when I can't even get my space suit on.

This really is crazy, if someone would make a Blu-ray player app that would play 3d Blurays in VR, I would buy it immediately, if it's a question of licensing, I'd spend enough to likely cover that. That is my MOST desired feature for VR....to be able to watch my collection of 3d Blu-ray movies, without having to rip, convert and otherwise harm quality.

SKYBOX Steam version has a filter system which makes those SKYBOX verifies as stuttered playback videos disappear from the list.
This system will filter videos according to the capability of Graphic Cards you use.
Right now there is a bug related to recognize RTX 2070 and RTX 2080.
We will soon release a new version to support these two Graphic Cards.

There is only one reason for this: user base is relatively too small compared to users who watch other kind of videos (ex. 180 SBS NSFW videos).
We have argued internally for too long about when should we start supporting Blu-Ray. However the fact is, there are always features/bugs with higher priority coming up so we have to delay the support for this.
At the end of the day, VR video player is more about 180/360 VR video playback.

We will of course support Blu-Ray in the future but unfortunately there is no ETA at the moment. When Blu-Ray is supported, it may also be the time SKYBOX starts charging...

Hope this info helps.

If you support 3D bluray in VR, so that I can basically watch my 3d blurays in a VR IMAX size screen etc on my pc.....I would shove 40 bucks your way in an instant. Seriously a lot of people would buy that app. It would reignite the 3D movie genre. I have a decent size collection of 3D blueray for my 3d TV already. More over I know several people who would like to get 3d Blurays but don't because you can no longer find new TV's with 3D......

The difference here is the content has already been made. There are already libraries of 3d movies....we just need a player for VR.

I have been looking for a solution for watching a dozen of 3D BluRays for a long time. Everything else either didn't work on a notebook (Nvidia 3D kit) or does not exist any more (passive 3D TVs in the size I want) or even ceased support for 3D BluRays (PowerDVD, stupid).

I would find it a bargain to pay, lets say, 15 or 20 € for a (well working) 3D BluRay software player for VR headsets which does not require any circumstantial or even illegal steps. I mean, it saves me hundreds of bucks for special hardware equipment (which I am not willing to pay).

So yes, +1.
P.S. In this case it should be possible to play back 3D BluRays in full FullHD resolution.

What's the status on the stuttering bug? I'm still having it horribly on my 2080ti, and it gets worse the longer the video plays. I can go back to an earlier point in the video before it started stuttering but once it starts it happens at the beginning too. The strange thing is I can watch the same videos on my underpowered oculus quest without any problems at all. Unfortunately this makes skybox unusable for me, which sucks because it has the best UX by a wide margin.

Sorry for the inconvenience. If possible, please share with us the stuttered video at support@skybox.xyz so we could test it on our side. Do you watch the video from local storage please? Thank you.

Okay I've paid my money for your basic player, I will pay again for Bluray support DLC

FYI for people wondering why we don't have this, it's because its a totally different style of 3D video format. 3D Blurays work with Frame Packing, not SBS, so that you don't lose half of the resolution that you do when splitting a video down the middle for each eye (As you do with SBS). With frame packing the full resolution of each eye is in the video file.

It's just an extremely unpopular format, and all VR mp4 video, for some reason, don't use frame packing and use the lower quality SBS option. Until VR video starts being released frame packed for higher visual quality, I wouldn't expect any VR players to start supporting it (including bluray). Of course no VR video will support frame packing until there are players than can play it, so you know... it'll just never happen. Not unless 3D blurays become hot tech all of a sudden, but that ship has sailed.

(Edit: Actually I didn't check if this player supports frame packed mp4, I just assumed it doesn't... if it does, excuse everything I said)

You can convert 3D bluray to SBS though, and the results do look amazing in fact in VR. the main issue is it takes quite awhile to convert and do it all. if there was a hardware player or something you could use with VR that would convert it for you in real time that would be optimal.
Super Bambaspis Feb 27, 2021 @ 5:55pm
The think the problem with converting a bluray to SBS is that it doesn't look amazing, and that's probably what rubs people about it. It's what rubs me about it.

You're taking 1920x1080 per eye and busting it down to 960x1080, or 1920x540 per eye when you convert to SBS (Unless you do full width SBS, but I think that's not supported?).
Sgt. Nick Fury Feb 28, 2021 @ 12:01am
Have you actually done this, or is this number crunch theory? I have in fact converted my own blu-ray movie to SBS. The extra depth etc does look amazing. I saw no loss in quality, the finished conversion is 3840x1080. Sure you can say I lost resolution, but I am not sure how much of that is actually perceived. It just took forever (a day) to accomplish. To me viewing on an Odyssey+ (has little to none SDE) it did look amazing. MY headset has 1440 x 1600 per eyes and the anti SDE tech. I can only say it looks much better then on my 3dTV with a higher resolution, and in my mind was more immersive then theater. If it was an easier process I would do it with my entire collection. I wish I just had a player that could play my blu-rays in 3d VR though.

I have programm thet can convert any 1,5h long 3D movie in 45min to a 3840x1080 SBS video and it looks amasing. So it isent a software problem thet cant be solved to livedecode it and show it as SBS video on a VR Headset.
And even if you save the video in a normal 1920x1080 SBS resolution you dont see in most parts mutch different.
And i noticed thet quite many 3D Blue Rays are not even in a 1920x1080 format instead they are mostly only max. 1920x980 for widescreen.
