I think Castoreh was the small streamer Adam made mention due to his attempt to "blackmail" him by releasing the private DMs to the public backfired (Castoreh showed them live on his stream when he said that) then blocked him and banned him from discord I believe.
But on this being illegal or malware, it really isn't. Think about MMOs where they need you to be online and their servers are always sending your PC information and data on live connection. So long as he isn't using it to gain access to your PC, which will be tricky and will be very illegal, he can still send information directly to your game to influence it in certain ways. This is a type of backdoor but Adam likes to say over and over it isn't even to this day. The reason why it is a backdoor is because his game has an access point he put in that the player is unaware of. With this access point Adam is able to send in data directly to the game to change the rules (like activating the Doll Maker without you triggering it by visiting the site). This type of backdoor just allows the 3rd party to send in data to change the system/software/game that makes it altered to what they want it to be regardless of the user.
Now again, this was all claimed to be a fun little troll event that wasn't scheduled or very well planned. I think that may have been the idea at first but Adam used it out of anger to try to punish a stream who has been farming views from his game after he was called an AH. This I cannot overlook since Adam has abused his power he had over someone else's game out of anger.
With Mark I do feel like there was something there but not as strong of an influence like in Castoreh stream. I think since the game still has to send in information to their server it is very possible that Adam can still use that server to send in commands to Marks PC if he found the IP address. It is very possible that Adam did made Marks game more unfair due to what Mark input was towards the game and Adam.
I did ask in their new game if it had anything like WTTG2 has. Adam tried to tell me that I am misinformed about what a back door is (I have certs with CompTIA and computer science background in both edu and job field experience, sure I am misinformed bud) then when tossed the "backdoor" term out he just said "No." without going into any detail.
With this game, it is best to be played offline. I am sure if Mark went back to it and played it offline then he would be able to beat it easily.
If you want to play the game, but want to ensure that nothing happens to your game. You can downgrade to a patch before the backdoor was even a thing. Here's a guide on how to do that: https://www.speedrun.com/wttg2/guides/yh27d
There are also mods that remove this feature, however the mods haven't been updated in 3 years (when this whole thing happened).
If you want to play this game, and don't want to support Adam. There's always ways to do that, maybe set sail upon the seven seas and see what you can find.
TL;DR probably not, but you can downgrade to a patch before the backdoor was even implemented if you're worried.
The fact that it's still allowed on steam is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wild to me, lmfao.
If you genuinely think this game has a "backdoor" you are stupid, period. There are no security or privacy risks that come with playing this game and there never was. It had asymmetrical multiplayer components that have since been removed.
You are correct. It's not new. What is new, however, is a dev using it for malicious purposes due to ass mad caused by criticism.
Just say "please ♥♥♥♥ me harder" and keep every port on your router open if you think it's "no big deal".
I get it, you watched a YouTube video and now cannot formulate your own opinion. That doesn't change the fact this entire thing was massively blown out of proportion (an understatement really) and a stream sniping developer made out as a cybercriminal scam artist hacker e-terrorist.
You're downplaying the fact that the dev is able to do that, again, "no big deal hurrrrr".
We get it; you're a super duper hacker man who knows how these things work, and is next going to tell me you "acckkkyually, I work in IT." Lmao.
2. Even if it was still possible, or the dev did it in another game, it literally doesn't matter because there is NO security or privacy risk. What are you struggling to understand about that? It's not a backdoor, virus, trojan, whatever you think it is. The dev could spawn enemies in your game, that's it.
3. I don't work in IT, I'm just not an idiot.
