Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR

Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR

Windows button is crashing SteamVR
Since the last windows version roll out, often when I use the 'windows' button on the WMR controller, SteamVR will crash, causing whatever application you are in to suddenly terminate. It doesn't do it all the time, probably 50/50 but it's really annoying as the placement of this button often leads to you hitting it by mistake.

I am Wondering if anyone else is having this issue, and / or if there are any suggestions to fix this.

It would be nice to be able to remap these buttons to do something else once you are in SteamVR, as they don't really have much use once you have turned on the controllers. (why would I want the WMR menu when I can just go look at the desktop?) I have already completely reinstalled mixed reality, SteamVR, and WMR for SteamVR, video card is up to date, and no other pending updates waiting to be installed, so I'm at a loss as to what else to try.

System is Ryzan 5 1600, 16 GB RAM, RX570 video. Headset is Samsung Odyssey Plus Windows Version 20H2

On a side note something else I've noticed with the last update, is the controllers like to 'go to sleep' very quickly if you aren't moving around, which puts you into 'one handed mode' in things like VRChat. It's nice that it is saving battery life, but I really would prefer to have a way to change this setting so it can be longer, or to just turn it off completely. I am also thinking it may be leading to tracking issues.

OK these crashes and tracking issues are really getting old....Can anyone shed any light on this one? System crash logs below:

I was in VRChat...BOTH controllers suddenly would no longer track. Pressed and held WMR button in an attempt to turn the controller on and off, SteamVR crashes and closes everything.

If anyone else is having this issue, I contacted Microsoft Support, and they suggested reinstalling the OS and downgrading to 1909. This has solved all the issues. If you haven't updated your OS yet, don't!

I have the same issue on my laptop with Win10 2004. Desktop PC is still on 1909 and working fine.

I had the same issue.
Then I found a Reddit post on how to disable the Windows button.

Since then my problem is solved.
For me I have no reason to use this button except for ingame button use, wich suddenly doesn't work with this kind of button-type.

I am not sure if it's a good idea to disable the Windows key entirely. When the battery on a controller is reaching a critical level it will display a message (blue WMR window will show up) and you can interact with it only when pressing the Windows button. So in such case you might be stuck with the message and no way to close it.

However I confirm I am also experiencing occasional drop to cliffhouse when hitting the Windows button while in SteamVR.

Good to know, I'm still running 1909, but for how much longer I can get away with not updating I don't know. Unfortunately I'm looking for a new headset that isn't WMR. Hoping the DecaGear gets released sooner rather than later. I really wish there were more choices in headsets that were directly compatible with SteamVR other than the Index (nice system but way too expensive) Something else I recently did which 'appears' to be helping with crashes in VRC (a welcome side effect of another program's settings) is adding a few keys to the registry to make windows wait longer if the GPU lags.... Instructions are from substance painter, but it seems to prevent things from shutting down during lag spikes....
