Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR

Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR

HTC VIVE Support?
Please excuse my rather stupid question, but does Windows Mixed Reality support the HTC VIVE headset? All that I heared so far is that Windows Mixed Reality is supposed to support Windows Mixed Reality Devices to run on SteamVR. But does it also work the other way round? I couldn't find any info about that. I'm actually more interested in using the Windows desktop and apps on my HTC VIVE than playing Steam Games with a Windows headset.

Thanks for the question! Windows Mixed Reality will only work with approved headsets and controllers. See our list of supported headsets[www.microsoft.com] for more details.

why would steam vr support windows mixed reality headsets, if windows will not support the vive headset??? It kind of pisses me off. I love vr and i do not want to purchase another headset for another microsoft attempt that may fail. I have always supported microsoft products. windows phone "fail", kinect "fail", groove "fail".
honestly microsoft I dont think you would have as many windows users if steam was not part of the family. I wish steam OS would have been successful.

I agree with you N3M35!5
I own a VIVE.

Oh and don't forget, Microsoft Band /2 "fail".
And I owned that and Windows Phone... still own windows phone..
I really hope they make this compatible with VIVE or so help me..

Microsoft have made the APIs. Any company can make a headset that uses them. If HTC want to make a driver for their kit that supports Windows then they can. Or they might not. There's little point asking Microsoft to write it for them. Same as there's little point in Mac users pressing Apple to make their computer compatible with any specific game. The only hope is to approach the game devs concerned. Windows is an operating system, not a game or app that runs on Steam. I'm sure HTC will want to do this so long as their headset meets the required spec. Mainly, I'm thinking about the resolution. If Windows MR is compatible with lower resolution devices I'm sure HTC will be working on suitable drivers. I hope so because this would really open up the possibilities for the Vive. It may be that HTC only does this for their next Vive 2 or something (which will likely move away from lighthouses and have higher res like the next Occulus and the WMR headsets) but I'm hoping previous gen kit can be brought along by HTC. Even if the text will be a challenge with lower res devices. I'm sure MS will be keen to assist any hardware manufacturer who approaches them, as there's every reason for them to do so and no reason not to.

Is there any news about this? I would like to watch the Winter Olympics in VR, but there's no app for Vive, only for Windows MR and mobile. At least that's what Intel's website shows[iq.intel.com].

Pretty sure everything for Windows MR is heavily tied to Windows 10, Fall Creator's Update and there is no way it is going to support Vive or Rift or anything but the WMR headsets. Microsoft doesn't have much on offer as compared to the 100's of games for Vive and Rift etc so I assume anything that says Windows MR they are going to be proud to have as an exclusive.

I think it's pretty terrible for Microsoft to release a VR platform that isn't compatible with the VR hardware that was already widely available and adopted instead hoping that people buy all new hardware. MS Compatible VR isn't nearly as good (resolution, motion tracking, shorter cables) so it's like the opted to shoot themselves in the foot. Also, Microsoft developed their software well after everyone else established so it should've been on them to reach out to HTC if they gave a damn.

While motion tracking isn't as good, it's a lot easier to set up inside-out tracking than outside-in - so it loses a bit on accuracy, but has a big win on convenience. Every single Vive/Oculus owner that I know personally and doesn't have a room dedicated to VR barely uses their expensive piece of kit due to PITA setup each time they want to use it.

Resolution is actually somewhat better on WMR than other current HMDs, so that's just plain wrong.

WMR works perfectly with cheap extension cables from Amazon, and doesn't need any form of link box or other hardware solution, so for an extra $10 or so, you have longer cables than any vanilla HMD - combined with WMR already costing only about half of the Vive, and that's not really a major issue.

MS can reach out to whomever they want, but market leaders have no real incentive to support WMR at this point - there is no killer app functionality or really very much useful in the Mixed Reality Portal at this point that isn't also available from free solutions.

Yes, it Vive and Oculus should support Windows Mixed Reality, but that decision is really on those vendors, and I can see why they wouldn't bother with the development costs. Expecially Oculus, since they can't even be bothered to create first party SteamVR support.
