Specifics on reincarnating to change bio layer??

Now...I tried looking this up but all the info I found was several years old, and a lot of things have changed. I was away from the game for a good while during some of these changes, and I was never fully clear on some points due to contradicting misinformation, so I'm asking here.

Is there a safer/proper way to change the bio layer through reincarnation without risking losing any layers? I know they added "save inherits" and "save skin" but IDK if the Save Skin feature will still change the bio layer?

I had gotten a bio snake and the bio wasn't on the freckle layer I was aiming for. I reincarnated, saving the inherits (awesome parents) but I lost the freckle layer, and after a few, the skin was broken entirely and there wasn't a good layer for the bio anymore. I'm after a very specific look, which is why I'm trying this.

Am I better off keeping this up with each bio until I get it or should I bio hunt breed until I get the layer I want?
