You also generally want to be fast, since you'll often be outnumbered or outgunned by anything that wants you dead. Something slow and powerful, like apatosaurus or saichania, may be doable if you're able to do your early growth in an isolated area of the map, away from other players; but you'll need to get lucky with your spawn point for that.
Biggest advice: don't go solo. BoB is not a solo game. It's advertised on Discords servers of this game to make friends and team up with others or you won't have a good time. Growing larger means everyone on the server will be targeting you, especially if you play on officials, as they have clans that scout the maps and kill everyone they deem a threat on sight, and you'll give the most meat to carnivores if you die. You'll also most likely die going up against a group.
Grouping up with other people also gives you huge buffs to your comfort and consequently, health and growth rate. It also means you can potentially mate with them if they're the same species and the opposite gender, which will give you a HUGE growth buff if someone manages to take your egg.
But if you're still insistent on playing solo, the only recommendation I can give you is to avoid hotspots (large bodies of water, snowy) and always be on the move. Unlike other dino games, you give scent and leave a trail other players can follow. Choosing colors that blend your creature to your surroundings, laying down and hiding under large grass only does so much. Your creature will become highlighted if another creature sniffs relatively close to you, so afk growing is a no go.
Only good dino that seems to do good as solo is Velo. They're fast enough to run from anything if you go down the speed route, and if you're good enough at buttriding and have the patience, it can 1v1 a lot of big dinos once you start filling the combat tree. I don't recommend any herbivores as they do infinitely better in a group. Birds and aquatics are kind of doable, but you're most likely to get ganged up on and cannibalized by bigger creatures of your own species if you go as them solo.
As for combat tips, you should obviously avoid creatures that have more growth than yours. As a carni, you should prioritize scavenging from spawn meat until you're 1.2+. Choose your battles carefully. Being solo means you won't be able to rely on anyone if a pack of 8 megalos jumps on you or a mosa starts dragging you underwater.
Id say if you want to solo in the water just go Mosa.
If you want to know what to solo Ichy over Lurd, i would pick Lurd.
Lol.
