But please join a community server first, and explore the game through there.
If you want chaos play Official servers.
People who are longer in the game will destroy you, doesnt even matter what dino you play
Best chances for yourself isnt starting out as one of the dinos, but rather beeing nested by one of the lead groups on the server and also staying in those groups
Otherwise your just screwed
You can keep an eye on the progress of the game and then decide for yourself
If however, you're interested in not dying constantly, and have any sort of life outside of this singular game, I can't recommend it. Perma death from dying, combined with power that is tied directly to how long you play, and how many people are in your clique, leads to pretty predictable gameplay.
Overall, it's a versatile, social, and pretty fun game. It doesn't have to be a massive time sink if you don't want it to be. Plus, it gets comparatively a lot of updates.
So yes, I would say buy it, if you like casual, social not-quite-realism with a lot of options for gameplay, it's a good game.
Honestly, I second this, 100%.
Also, being KOS'ed by big players who did so because "they just can" or are "fishing for salt"is VERY common, the faster you get used to it the better.
Don't play this game if you're a type of person who gets upset easily, that's for sure.
