How are we supposed to play this?
Without the wiki and guides I mean.

I played this game a long time ago, and forgot most of it. But I remember the cool atmosphere, so I plan to get back into it again. Back then I used the wiki, but would like to avoid it, since that feels more like doing homework, rather than actually playing.
However I remember the game being extremely very without outside help, especially with time-sensitive events and cards. You'd have to spend sooo much time to try to match time-sensitive events with time-sensitive cards, and of course a lot of times they don't even match. And of course if you die you have to grind out a lot of things again.
The ways you can die is also numerous, and I don't remember getting any proper feedback on deadly events and interactions.
While I absolutely enjoy the exploration and the permadeath as well, they combine into a lot of repetition in this game.

Any ideas on that? Maybe things changed since i last played?

Timer and information overload mostly. I'm a TBS player (mostly).
My approach is to place a hand on the spacebar and 123 for pause and time speed and just keep pausing intermittently to plan your moves.
When paused, you can see which timer will be relevant to you first, so just watch THAT one and pause when it goes, then make your actions when paused and select the next timer you want to watch :)

This effectively will turn it into a turn based game.

So just use pause to slow down your information intake. You can review everything on the board when paused and take as much time as you need.

a mod called "The Wheel" might have utility for you, or "Highlight Next Decay"
or both.
