Ive heard you can only get a love interest after killing the enemy long but during the "kidnapping a follower" attack the long seeks out your love interest then when that fails he grabs a random follower.

So is it possible to get a love interest before killing the long?

Pretty much my good fellow. It impossible for the apostle to find love when they are still their mentor.
