Lore: who, or what is Janus and why should I care?

there are several references to Janus by characters, books, and victory screens throughout the game. I haven't found all of them, so can anyone explain to me why Janus is so important?

In ancient Rome, Janus was the god of the moon. Famously two-faced, he fits with many of the tropes usually associated with entities that have "phases". It's an interesting enough read if you want to look him up, and might help put context on some of the lore.

Isn't Janus mentioned only in that one book by Teresa (aside from the victory screen)? I was under the impression that it is some meta-joke. "Hersault and Coseley - according to Thomas Love Denman - once agreed that Janus was 'all the gods and none'. But later, Hersault insisted he was 'all the gods', and Coseley favoured simply 'none'". To me it sounds that Janus is the collective image of all Hours together - in other words the author of the game.

Teresa also mentions him if you ask her to sign that same book.
"I got very excited about Janus, back then. Now I think that if Janus is anyone, that anyone must be the Watchman or the Meniscate. Riddles tend to expand, puzzles tend to resolve."

Generally speaking, in the world of CS, IRL gods are used by Knows to refer to actual Mansus entities and events without drawing suspicion. Well, most of the time at least.
