can't found cult

The beginners guide says to put your acquaintance in the talk verb and everything should be pretty straightforward. However none of my acquaintances allow me to make a cult. It might be because I no longer have my first acquaintance, which I had to give up to not be killed for whatever reason by that woman. What do I do?

You can't give an acquaintance to Poppy, only actual Followers, so... you must already have a cult?

It doesn't seem to be the case. When I try to recruit somebody, it says "Once you've established a cult, use TALK with the Cult to recruit an Acquaintance to your Cult's ranks".
I think the problem is that the first person you meet will be your follower, and they let you make a cult. So I'm locked out of founding a cult now.

The first person you meet is not a Follower until you've actually founded your Cult. You can't give them to Poppy until then.

Maybe they weren't a follower then. But I did give them to Poppy, so I don't know what that means.

So you already have a Cult. Even if it is empty and has no members, it is still a cult.
Card should look like hooded person on the same background as lore you found it on. Try to click on the slot in the Talk verb to light up all cards which can go there, cult should be among them.

The first time you talk to someone with Aspect: Acquaintance it should create a new Verb where you first place a Lore (which determines which cult you found), then an Ability, and finally an Acquaintance (doesn't even have to be the same Acquaintance). You'll then get your cult (will have Aspect: Society), a Temporary Headquarters, and the Acquaintance will become your first follower.

The cult card will look like a hooded figure with a background colour matching the lore used to found the cult. It will have Aspect: Society as I mentioned.

To find new acquaintances, talk about Lore (any).

If you were able to feed them to poppy, you have founded your cult.

Take a look around the board for one of the following cards, which represents your cult: Mirror of Glory, Unflinching Order, Church of the Bright Edge, Children of Silence, Towers of the Dove, Temple Unceasing, Order of the Bloody Cup, Wildwood Club, Society of the Holy Wound, Society of St Hydra.

Use that card along with an aquaintance (and some amount of your cult's aspect, such as a low level lore) to recruit additional cultists.

Okay it seems I was wrong and I do have an empty cult. Sorry for the misunderstanding and thank you for your help.

Now when I want to recruit a new follower I've got all the ingredients but I need to have done something else as well. I need to "glean something from an influence, a tool, an ingredient, or a lore". I've got plenty of lore cards - how do I get what I need from them?

Just put the right Lore in the slot. It is Lore of the same principle as your cult, except if you have Society of St Hydra, in which case you can use any principle except Secret History.
You can use Influence, Tool or Ingredient in the other slot, but I recommend doing it only if you want to get rid of Influence or promote someone to the level you don't have enough Lore to reach.
