You can switch at any time, and you'll get the ascension that you have the most marks for (with a secret ascension for balancing them).
Is the amount of my marks noted on my ascension card, like in other paths ? Sould it be something like: "heart 2, moth 3", written on my card, or is this information given somehow differently.
And, if I combine heart and moth in one dance, will I just get the mark for the prevailing amount of aspect in that dance ?
If you mix the two in one dance, it will just pick one of the recipes that qualifies, like it does with other things (particularly rituals). The priority with which it picks a recipe is beyond me; I typicaly just put in the aspect I need. There's no reason to mix them in the same dance; it just makes it harder to get enough of what you need.
I'm chasing this secret ending that you spoke of. I'm about to hit 3/3 with moth/heart dances... however, the only place left to explore is port noon. Can I get the secret ending with 3/4 or 4/3, or is there something else to it?
P.S. Six scars really limits the margins for error.
A simple followup for posterity's sake. I was mistaken; though there are only 7 sending locations, there is a dance undertaken after the seventh allowing for a perfect 4/4. As moth influence is hard to come by, I ended up turning to art for the last of it... it felt like a fitting conclusion.
So, after the 8 dances there's a check. Each successful dance increments either moth or heart values. At the end, if you have 5+ of either, you get the ending text associated with that aspect; if you finish with 4/4, you get something different.
The cost of switching only really means something in relation to scars (each holds 4 influence but eats an attribute), and in the power of the influences that you will be required to utilize in order to meet the requirements of the dances (the last of which requires 17 influence).
Does that make sense?
While Jungle answered your question, I feel I should point out an error:
You can't use Moth lore and items for a Moth ascension. Dances only take stats, scars, and Influence.
If you suddenly get an influx of Moth lore and items, it makes absolutely no difference to your Ascension. You shouldn't base your switch on how much Lore or Tools or Ingredients you have.
If you mean you want to switch Cult, you can't. You can never switch Cult. But Cult has absolutely nothing to do with what Ascension you are doing.
