Grim Idealist?? Hunter confusion
I think I'm having trouble figuring out how hunters work here. I have an idealist who is grim, and it seems like that shouldn't work? I'm not sure what I'm supposed to take advantage of for idealist, but I know what I need for grim and idealist makes that not work.

Also is there any way to take care of them more directly except just sending in a knifey man? Wouldn't mind capturing one since I need prisoners.

Idealists are more vulnerable to talking about fascination, but immune to dread.

Grim is the converse. So if you have a hunter with both, neither option will work.

Sending a knife-aspect follower or summon to take care of a hunter (or potentially winter aspect) will actually take them prisoner rather than killing them outright.

Of course, it's possible for a hunter to be an idealist, grim, tenacious, and mystical. In which case the only way to deal with them is to throw minions into the grinder until one of them finally succeeds. This honestly feels kind of obnoxious. There might be something you can do with maximum-level physique as well, judging by its description

Of course, if you get a nigh-immortal hunter, you can always just destroy their evidence every time they make it.
I am in the exact position with a nigh-immortal hunter with all of those traits. Welp.

Well, if you can get a ten knife power disciple, you can just keep trying to assassinate him. Even if Tenacious triggers, your cultist won't actually die. It'll work eventually. Probably.

Talk to a moth-aspect follower or summon, and the use the evidence as the topic of conversation

I just managed to convince Connie Lee (who starts Mystic and Tenacious) into being a Grim Idealist.

I now know what my Maid is going to be busy doing for the next half hour. :P

Some thing to add, they are only likely to gain a passive ability if the attempt fails, with high level lantern lore, winter lore, follower with high level knife, or follower with high level moth its guranteed to work, based what they do/dont already have. This makes it so the best tactic is to wait to get rid of hunters until you have the proper tools.

Trying the thing now, let's see what happens. It could just be me flexing and showing her I'm a T.H.I.C.C. boi for no apparent reason.

I think the "exposed" verb has even more meaning here :3

@Ouroboros

My first win was a Winter cult, and I've never seen a Winter cultist capture anyone. They either kill or do nothing.

I have to tell you that a hunter immune to depression via winter/dread is very useful to keep around so that you can alway get a dread if you're at lv.3+ in ascension, because you lose your 'restlessness' resource pool.

I dunno, generating notoriety to get dread seems a little drastic. I've never had that much trouble controlling fascination. If you don't rely on painting for income, you don't tend to get a lot of it, and it's easy to burn it during recruitment and promotion early on and in summonings later on. As far as I remember, there's nothing in the game that will just randomly force you to gain fascination as time passes, so it's easy to slow down and focus on fighting the visions if you find yourself with 1-2 fascination.

I must confess, I've never really delved into this part of the gameplay dealing with hunters. In my first game, I had Spencer Hobson as my hunter, who was unkillable after an early attempt on his life gave him Tenacious, but also ineffectual with his Erratic nature. He almost never managed to make evidence after getting a Notoriety, and I don't think he fabricated evidence out of thin air more than once or twice over the entire game (which was a full game ending with an Enlightenment victory).

At one point, I did generate a second hunter by holding Hobson hostage with my cursor, but that one was easily dispatched by a Maid in the Mirror summons and ended up being one of the many, many sacrifices I made to the Spider's Door. But I never did try talking to a Hunter again after it just generated notoriety early on without accomplishing anything.
