Alternatively, painting will generally produce contentment if you're good at it and do well.
Once you have it, use Dream with Dread, then add Contentment to the new box that it adds, and run it. They'll destroy each other in the process.
On the other hand, if you get the random event of dark thoughts (don't remember the actual name, sorry), it will automatically suck up both Dread and Contentment (Contentment reduces the Dread count by one per) until it either kills you (at 3 Dread) or goes away (at 0 Dread)

Thanks. I am having too much dread. I hope this helps.
+ you can use dread on Fascination to block it for some time;
+ you can burn Dread during rituals when they require Edge, so have ritual always ready;
+ when converting people into followers, try putting it into slot 4 to burn, so always have 1 non-follower just in case;
+ sometimes lore upgrades have weird requirements, like Fascination.
So the basic rule is: if there is some action which requires cards, make sure to check if it can consume dread, maybe i missed something.
The best way get Contentment is by Dreaming with Funds. It guarantees Contentment, but there is a low chance it would start Despair or Sickness.
