GameBreaker: The Grim Idealist Hunter.
So it struck me that everytime i have lost a game has been against a hunter who is BOTH a GRIM and and IDEALIST. Does anyone know if this is a bug or just that the developer are sadists? maybe they didnt playtest the singleplayer?
Is there a viable strategy against this, beyond meatgrinder goons until one sticks?

If you do enough expeditions you can bring home some poison. That's how I got rid of my Tenacious Grim Idealist, but finding it in the first place is hardly reliable.

Options for Getting Rid of Them:
1) Slip a little something into their tea. I've never had this fail.
2) Send an unstoppable force after them.

Options for Putting Up with Them:
1) Moths are fond of eating evidence. There is always some risk, but Prophet.
2) Distract them with pretty pictures until your crimes are forgotten.

I managed to win (first proper victory) with a Grim, Idealist, Tenacious, Mystic. Never got rid of them, lucked out a couple of times with damning evidence not convicting because I was bad a remembering how to summon Mothy things to remove evidence. Tried about six or eight times to poison them, but they wouldn't die.

So, it does suck. But it's not the end of the world.

I won both of my game without ever getting rid of a hunter. You can simply destroy his evidence whenever he gets any. I usually do that with a raw Prophet or a voiceless dead, because they are easy to summon and expendable.

Was this hunter Connie Lee, by any chance? One of my playthroughs ended up with her being a Grim Idealist as well, though I got lucky by persistently sending Professional Muscles against her until one of them captured her.

If you can't get rid of the hunter set up a heart disciple on cult business as your expeditions complete. They will fail a bunch but you can usually get 2-3 shots at destroying the notoriety before an inspection season rolls along.

If your savings are stable, you can always paint your way out of a corner creating a backlog of mystique.
If they aren't Mystic, send a summoned force of Knives at them.

If your savings aren't stable, painting is a great way to fix that, especially if you're using it to hide Notoriety.

you cant get rid of detectives permanently, all that happensi if you kill them is another one comes.

Put a Heart Cultist into talk with your Cult card, they can destroy notoriety without a risk to themselves.
You can also get rumors out of that, but if you don't work them, they won't turn into notoriety.

In an earlier thread addressing this same issue, one poster indicated that the combination of Grim and Idealist weaknesses somehow overrode the immunities they granted - and that a Grim Idealist hunter could be both driven to despair or entranced by fascination.

I have not tested that myself, but if true that would make such Hunters much easier to deal with.

What I have actually noticed, is that when Hunters go on long evidence treks - when you are a painter for instance - when they come back they have sometimes lost their Idealist and grim traits if they gained them via failed Dread and Fascination murder attempts.

Frankly I wouldn't bother killing them unless they have Erratic or Meticulous; they will just be replaced by another Investigator - and the new one might be one that can actually investigate (i.e. Inspector Wakefield, Spencer Hobson or Doctor Natalia Dragon).

That said, if you are determined to kill the Investigator and they don't have Mystic you can just throw summons at them - Maid (Edge 10 / Winter 10) is a guaranteed kill, other options are Ezeem (Grail 12 / Edge 12) or King Crucible (Forge 12 / Edge 12). Percussigant (Heart 8 / Edge 8) will get the job done most of the time as well.

If they have Mystic you can either throw Edge cultists at them, or if you want less risk just use Winter Cultists (lower chance of killing but lower chance of death).

Even if the investigator has all four protection mods, you can continually lock them up in the Talk Verb with a Winter Cultist, who will eventually manage to kill them.

You can also use poison from vaults to kill them.

Otherwise you can use your Heart cultists to reliably grab Notoriety if you have a board clear of Mystique. Alternatively, you can spam Painting to fill your board with Mystique, which can seriously prolong investigations, giving evidence time to expire.

If you only have one Notoriety, you can also just hold it in your hand whilst the Suspicion verb is about to become active; you can also lock it up in the work verb using Painting, though this will typically create additional Notoriety so timing is important when using Painting in this way.

As a last resort, there is A Favour from Authority in the Mansus if you have a Knock 12 or the Lantern 8/12 artefacts to get past the Peacock Door. This will save you from trial if the Investigator successfully brings Damning Evidence to trial.
