Is it ever explained why Narm is the way he is?

Not specifically, to the best of my knowledge, but supremacists in general tend to have common themes behind thier views - lack of real world experience, judgemental personalities, and a certain infantile mindset. There are also some links to narccistic personality disorder. Narm seems a bit more idealistic than infantile, and thus seems a bit more mature than your standard supremacist. But the childishness of putting others down to build himself (his ideology, in this case) up, is still visible.
After the latest game, A dragon's treasure, it seems clear that Narm is capable of learning and adapting his worldview, So it's possible that we might see him grow past this issue.
