This game is, like ChemicalWar already said, pure Wonder Boy. The Graphic is very similar, to the point that some enemies look just like out of a Wonder Boy in Monster World.
Sega made a couple of those, the Arcade Wonder Boy Monster Land(which saw a Master System release), followed by Wonder Boy Dragon's Trap(Released for the Master System ... but you can find the Remake on Steam!), the next one was Wonder Boy 5 Monster Land 3(on Genesis)and finally Monsterland 4(also Genesis ... but only in Japan).
Important, Wonder Boy 3 Monster Lair is a total different Game ... it is the Arcade version of the next Wonder Boy ...NOT Wonder Boy Monster Land. Yes there are TWO series of Wonder Boy.
As for Zelda II similarities, aside from the lone 2D side-scroller phase, there is however more than this :
Elements Palaces shares a lots with the ones in the Zelda title above, even the (slightly annoying ^^' ) music tones. Of course, most villages refers to the old MonsterWorld/Land series, but some others seems also to be taking out from the ones in Zelda 2 ( especially the forest' village. ).
And there is some sword attack's techniques, like in the same above.
Ok, Wonderboy didn't have these, but had a whole bunch of magic spells to cast instead. ( Now, reunited in Aggelos.
As for the Megaman "feeling" I still have no clue either...
( But I can't still help myself still finding something NES-sy in this game - maybe it has something to do with this typical colour palette ? )
Well, i saw Wonder Boy in Monster Land in the Arcades back then, even played it. I also played Zelda 2 when it came out, apart from all the Wonder Boy In Monster World games(apart from Monster World 4, which i knew existed but ... didn't want to pay the import price).
Zelda 2 references are very few in here, now we can argue, the Downward Thrust ... actually Monster World 4 has that move as well. But granted, Zelda has that, also ... that Dungeon Music ... the beginning reminds heavily at Zelda 2. But that could be because the Game uses sorta a 8bit style
For me this is a pureLove Letter to Wonder Boy in Monster World. The only things missing are a Shield you can use to block, the exciting way to open Chests(usually all sound became silent, as Wonder Boy opened the chest in anticipation...), Hidden Doors that can be about anywhere ...
Elemental Palaces/Shrines ... don't make me count the games back in 8bit and 16bit days that used them.
As for Mega Man ... i don't feel it. No Boss you defeat and get it's weapon ...
NES ... it is not only the Color Palete ... it is also how many Colors are used(8bit had fewer they could show at once then 16bit machines) and not to forget the Resolution ... this game is more like a NES and Mster SYstem game.
^^" I know, it's much more a matter of memories and feelings in it, here. And why arguing ? -It's still a great game with a lot of tributes (and some puns) to all these oldscool gems, anyway.
Maybe the authors can tell more about this, after all. ?
But you're right, Aggelos looks like a Sega(Weststone) Game ... on an NES, if that makes sense.
Also, it would be nice, to know the Inspiration for Aggelos from the Authors, i agree.
Indeed, this game may be sometimes tough, I still have a lots of fun playing it, too.
( ...And now having play it a bit more forward, I saw even some more minor easter-eggs ;) - no spoilers, but it may implies Super Mario, Kirby and some Alex Kidd's gimmicks, between some others still untold.
