Are there no background characters in this game?

I remember seeing some screenshots of a Touhou floater fighter that had various background characters, such as the famous dancing Orin, the SDM crew and even Rinnosuke himself. However, even when I shift background to both normal and simple in this game, there is nobody there unless it's on the concert stage with the Prismriver and Raiko.

Just one stage with background characters seems rather odd, so is there a way to get the other stages to have them?

You're thinking of Hopeless Masquerade which has background characters. Unfortunately that's the only game that has it.

Aw, that's a bit sad. I assume they took them out for performance reasons, nd I still get fps drops. anyways.

Doubt it since Hopeless Masquerade had an option to make them static images if performance declined + like you said only one stage in AoCF still has them. They never really explained why they were taken out (am assuming it's for story reasons).

Though there's no reason to not include them in vs. mode so it's more likely tasfro being lazy.
