Help with loading the game and using a controller

I bought the cd version of the game recently. However I had problems opening it. I changed the compatibility to Win 8, it worked but there are time frenquently that there is no respomd after I click to launch the game.
Another problem is about the controllers. I have a play station dual shock (long story of why I didn't buy the xbox controller instead) and I use it to play touhou all the time. It worked at the beginning, but recently touhou games would not respond to the controller. So I changed the profile setting and linked the button to the corresponding letters on the keyborad instead. It works expect that I have to make sure I don't use Direct Input from controller marked in the custom settings. So here comes the problem, 15.5 has configs for both keyboard and gamepads, but I don't know how to switch it from keyboard to game pad. It seems that the game is recognizing my devices as keyboard. So I decided to link all the buttons to the keyboard. But there is no custom setting in the file that allows me to click off Direct Input. So... the game won't respond... I really need help sovling this problem. If anyone know the solution, please tell me!!!

Have you tried using Steam's controller support for Dual Shock controllers? That's what I use for this game, works fine for my Dual Shock 4.

WHen that fails I use DS4Windows but it's a bit more complicated to set up correctly.

I been using DS4, to be honest, I didn't know there is controller support from Steam. Where do I set it up?

Settings -> Controller -> General Controller Settings.

You may need to use big picture for it to work properly, but it usually isn't necessary.

I'm able to connect it through steam now, but I have trouble having the game recognizing the controller, I don't how to switch it in the game from keyboard to gamepad. So I have to set the buttons to corresponding letters on the keyboard, which is a lot of work.

That's a bummer. Sorry, but I don't know how to help you further. =/

For me the game automatically recognizes the controller as soon as I start using it either on the main menu or on the character selection screen, I don't think I had to configure anything (other than keybinds since the game only recognizes the analog stick by default, ignoring the D-Pad).
