Low FPS with "good" hardware
Hi all. I have:
- i5 9600k
- 16GB RAM
- MSI 1660 TI

I'm playing with full graphics at 1080p and in some specific parts the game runs at 20-40 fps.
In the cities or the town the game runs at > 100 fps.

Is that normal to have those low fps with my hardware?

Thanks.

Eastshade is made with Unity, a widely-used game engine. Although the map is very crowded with trees in some areas, it shouldn't be much slower than other Unity games. The fact that it runs fast in some areas and slow in others suggests that you don't have much memory on your graphics card. And there's no reason for that, given the the specs you quote.

Do you have screen-monitoring software installed ? Perhaps something that allows you to record or broadcast your gameplay ? Or take lots of screenshots ? Can you turn it off for testing ?

Can you describe the views that make it run slowly ? Do they all have running water in them ? Or perhaps all show a lot of sky ?

I don't have any software recording.
The zones that runs with slow fps are those with lot of trees, junks, grass, etc.

One thing to add is that I'm playing on Linux. But I'm pretty sure that's not a problem.

I'm getting horrible fps drops in certain areas myself, particularly when riding around Nava and near the big Tree. Sometimes performance is cut in half. It's not your hardware, it's just not optimized well seemingly. Actually one of the only downsides to this amazing game.

i5 9600k is the only thing that could slow it down.
There is a reason why my older cpu is as good as yours if not better.
Intel did mess up in its latest releases and that is why AMD won the race.
Usually the i5 would be good for games of that generation and one year later you need a new cpu for AAA titles and less optimized games.
But what happened with latest releases was that instead of a year, the i5 versions felt like only 6 months or even 3.

All open world games put huge stress on cpu's since there are a lot of things being loaded at once.
It becomes hard to optimize for it especially for gimped cps' like i5's.

If you are a gamer you should avoid i5 cpu's, they are more of a budget cpu, not really for games even if they can do for a year.
Get an i7 or an amd(which is usually cheaper and better)
When choosing a CPU never cheap out, since a CPU can last you for up to 4-6 years while playing on full graphics since most of the effort is usually done on the GPU.(cheap out on the gpu since you would need to change it anyway in a year or 2 if you want to play on full settings)

I would not say that it is normal to have such low fps, so there is definitely some optimization issues(unity is not the best engine but can be quite good with a lot of work).

I did not notice any slow downs on fps but I might have if i did the same things you did.

What? The 9600K is a monster of a 'gaming' CPU, the only thing letting the original poster down is his sub par GPU, hope this helps.

RTX2080, i7 8700k and 32GB ram, similar experiences, sometimes get 120fps straight down to 30 in some areas...

It's the unity game engine, it's notoriously bad at optimization, you need to work very hard as a developer to fully optimize the game with this engine!

To illustrate just how under-powered the 1660 series is, my 4-year-old 1080 mops the floor with this POS GPU and has 8Gb VRAM vs that s#|t card's puny 6 Gb!

The GTX 1660 is s#1t when compared with the GTX 1080,[gpu.userbenchmark.com] no two ways about it...

I had no idea actually. Thank you for that bit of information.

Side note: I don't know what's wrong with that guy lol. Bragging about pc hardware, let alone hardware from 4 years ago... Does absolutely nothing?

OP, please check how much GPU utilization you're getting. I get low FPS because the game just isn't using the power my PC has.
