No, I've just done this, I think I slept and the real detective shows up, then you have to tell the detective who you think it is.

picked up (read) the paper in the water by the backside dock?

the 'real detective' shows up when you have finished part one of the quest. (talked to all, read everything, search the rooms)

One more thing...I noticed there was a briefcase in one of the rooms that seemed to have a combination lock on it...but no "numbers" show up so I don't know how to put the right combination into the "tumblers".
I assume the 4 digit code is the one from the last page in one of the room's books that I found?
Or...is this briefcase simply a prop and not needed?

I don't know if it's needed or not but yes that 4 digits is the answer.

Thanks, but how does one enter those 4 digits? I tried, but since no numbers are visible when you can turn the 4 "locks" dials, how do you know you're turned them to the right numbers/digits?

I think it's needed to open the briefcase using the 4 digit code. In my first try I tried to see numbers on the tumblers, but there aren't any. On my second try I clicked each tumbler the number of times from the code, from left to right, but that didn't work, as after clicking the second tumbler 9 times, the first one on the left turned around a couple of times and my trial failed. The third time I used the code from right to left and that did work. After errors put the briefcase down and try again.

INteresting...from right to left, huh? Ill try it out

Try it again, carefully, as this opens it.

Thank you...it worked! Left to right, with the number as seen on the page in the book. Opened it and I was able to continue!

Click each tumbler on the briefcase, from right to left, 1, 4, 9 and 5 times respectively. That should work! In the briefcase you should find a note and an artefact. The artefact should be from Tiffmoor Ruins, but no idea how that could be acquired. After all your investigations the real detective will show up and can tell her who stole the book in your opinion.

I think you ment right to left!

I did this one left to right not more than half an hour ago. Starting with 5. Worked fine for me.

(love the Reed boat btw)

Altbert....I put in 5-9-4-1, LEFT to RIGHT on the tumblers (screen left to screen right,5 clicks-9 clicks-4 clicks-1 click and it opened right up)
joridiculous Mar 1, 2019 @ 7:17pm
the blank spot on the tumblers are the hint you want for the code.
