Whats the deal with the fox?

A saviour, perhaps? Death himself seems to command him to Misfortune's location, according to the demo's intro cutscene. Furthermore, Mr Voice clearly shows irritability toward the fox whenever he is talked about, and according to Mr Voice, Misfortune will die.

My theory is: Mr. Voice is a demon much like Remor from Fran Bow and is trying to get Misfortune killed. That is however not how she is supposed to die and death is trying to prevent it, since it's not her destiny. The fox is deaths eyes and ears, which is why he is so often seen by Misfortune. His task is to guard her from Mr. Voice.
