Is it intentional to lose ammunition by touching the walls?

If you are very near or touching the walls at the top and bottom the game simply doesn't render the shots and nothing gets wounded, but ammo is used. Is it supposed to be that way?

Any time I am very close to the upper or lower walls the weapon acts as if it is firing but no projectiles are being rendered and no damage. Ammunition is expended as well.
