I played this on PS3 and beat it, some of the level designs for classic sonic were spot on, some of them were horrible.
I think the biggest issue here is the Sonic franchise was always about speed and stuff and some of the classic stages directly contradict that concept by adding in way too many environmental obstacles and hazards.
The early classic stages were really fun and I really left wanting more of that and not everything else the game introduced.
Granted, some of the 2D levels had some problems here and there, but overall they were great, especially playing in the Mid-Era Levels, i.e City Escape. Perfect Chaos wasn't great because you weren't Super Sonic. You kicked Chaos' ass just by being regular Sonic.
The only complaint I have for the game is NOT ENOUGH CLASSIC LEVELS! There were only 3 Genesis levels, there needed to be more!
Then there's the issue with the criticism of the games not being much like platformers if you're never challenged with obstacles.
You're part of a rather small minority in that...the 2D games are generally considered the best of the series. (I personally have no opinion, since I haven't played the newer ones except a bit of Sonic 3D, and it's been close to 12 years or so since I last played the 2D games that weren't Mean Bean Machine.)
"BLOCK PLATFORMING BLOCK PLATFORMING BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK"
shut up sonic colors was already bad
I thought colors was awesome, I have it on Wii (alone with secret rights and the knight one which are meh) but I'm just a sonic fanboy who likes all the sonic games and buy them regardless, lol.
I have to say though, Generations is BY FAR one of the best in the recent sonic games. I just wish the open world part of it was more like Adventure and Sonic 06.
All in all though, they did really well on both Classic and Modern stages. The two of them being in one game was AWESOME.
I should probably get around to eventually getting it... eventually, some day... eventually! :P
Final Boss: That looks like a homing shot! No ♥♥♥♥... Be careful, Sonic! I'M TRYING!! It's a warping arm attack! HOW DO I DODGE THAT BULLCRAP!? *beep beep* WHERE ARE RINGS WHEN YOU NEED THEM!?
Seriously, I was so glad when that was finally over. I've replayed every boss level and rival battle in hard mode except for that one, with GOOD REASON.
Also, I disagree that the old games were about speed. I recently got Sonic 1 back out and played it and I had to slowly go through each stage to avoid losing rings so I would have 50 at the end to get to the bonus stages. I felt that the seemingly random walls that stopped you if you didn't jump over them were actually a good design choice generally. Most of them were placed just before an enemy or a pitfall. If that obstacle hadn't been there, you'd have probably run right into it and died or at least lost your rings.
Whoops I misread "generations" as "colours" and then rewrote "generations" myself! Silly me, asking a question I already knew the answer of (since I've finished this game)! Sorry guys!
I do like the Generations hub world on that note. Pity there's not much stuff to do - random enemies lying around (that can't kill you and instead only stun you) could make for good practice/muckabout fun.
So, what I meant to ask - does Colours have free roaming? (probably not?).
Now for me to screw my head on tighter so I stop saying strange things.
