I can beat this game by playing only Act 2 levels?

No. You have to play as both Classic and Modern Sonic in each level, as well as do at least one of the challenges per Act in each era in order to get to each boss, as well as doing Classic Sonic's rival battle with Metal Sonic.

In order to advance in the game regarding challenges I can play as Modern Sonic without having to play classic? Not including the metal sonic battle.

Shoot, my previous post was kind of crappily worded. Sorry about that!

Yeah, you can play as just Modern Sonic for the challenges. You only need to do one challenge for each level to get the boss keys to advance on, and it doesn't matter which Sonic you play as. You only need to do 9 of the 90 challenges, if you just want to play through the game and have all the levels.

It's a fun game so why speed through? I just 100% this game and it was fantastic, every level and challenge was fun.

That said..... if you want to speed through play each level as both act 1 and 2 and one challenge as both act 1 and 2 as well as all the mini bosses in each area for the gems (shadow, silver, etc).

you need to do both stages, do some missions, beat up rivals and beat the time eater to finish the game, for further content, watch youtube Sonic Generations how to do better at missions
