It looks like you are going to have to play it with PC controls or get an Xbox 360 or One controller wired
Or you can use an Xbox 360 controller emulator, like Steven said. It does do it's job really well.
I personally use x360ce to get my PS2-type controller to work.
I do know that if you do use x360ce, Sonic Generations requires a special version of the program, which is tailored just for Generations.
But it will allow your controller to work (with the program, you're using an Xbox 360 controller as far as Sonic Generations can tell.)

Solves everything, allows your PS4 controller to work, etc. Please share it to other friends. I can't stand people using the wrong DS4 drivers.
