You can only buy it in bundles with other sonic games to inflate the price and not make it seem like Sonic X Shadow Generations is expensive while costing twice as much as the original on release.

Yet while offering twice (ish) the content, so the way I see it, it's fair

you mean a fake remaster with DLC vs the exact same game in a bundle with several games ?

lol , the coping for that re-release scam is unreal .

Several other games that also drive up the price of Gens if you just want that, and an outdated version of the game at that

Compared to the remaster which has more content/features/runs better that make the old version obsolete by basically all objective measures?

But I am the one coping......

It's unlikely that it runs better (besides crashes) and this version still has the mods so I wouldn't say it's obsolete.

But Gens was 30€ on Steam on release and dropped down to 5€ usually (even as low as 1€!). I don't think the new version offer 10-120 times more, at least on PC. Glad it's there but Segas pricing has been kinda high these past few years.

It really does, Chemical Plant does not tank on fps just because it feels like it anymore, the Pinball game will actually work for more than 3 minutes, you don't have pop-in anymore on certain cutscenes, and that is before it actually accepting the fact that you can switch displays without the game freaking out (which is especially obnoxious if you are on Steam Deck with a dock)

And that is before talking about stuff like multiple save files proper and the Shadow content (which feels a bit dismissive to write off because that is part of the package)

Sure there is mods, but given how fast the community has been with mods at this point, give it a few years and it will catch up

Fair point. The Chemical Plant and other performance issues can be fixed with the DX11 mod by the way.

I'm just a bit salty that the new version is so expensive, has no discount for existing owners and that the quality of the lighting and graphics of Sonic games just got worse and worse since Unleashed, including the Shadow content from what I saw.

You are kinda proving my point if you have to cite mods to fix it. Kinda indicative that the port is scuffed by comparison

I'll kinda agree, SEGA could have cut us some slack if we already owned the original, though it is debatable if they should have, considering that Shadows campaign has remained the focus of the marketing and the selling point of this remaster, which is content that no one has otherwise, so there is points on both sides on that debate

As for graphics.......I know what I am about to say may upset Sonic Twt, but I still believe it, you put both Gens and Unleashed in neutral levels, I can't particularly tell them apart (the only way I can is through very specific Sonic animations)

That is not to say I think HE1 games don't hold up, I just think Unleashed graphics gets gassed up because it gets inflated with stuff like the CGI (because that is really good)

As for is it worse? I mean I don't think so, but that is subjective I guess

Gens and Unleashed can look very similar, with mods they look basically identical.
Gens had to tone down some effects like directional lighting but makes up for it in high fps and clarity.

Forces and Frontiers just look pretty flat. Physically based rendering now no dynamic lighting, no global illumination, everything just looks a bit flat and more plasticy due to lack of proper lighting and the performance in Frontiers is pretty bad anyway.

Segas lost it's technical edge and greatly reduced the budgets of Sonic games and it shows but not in number of sales it seems.

I kinda disagree. I think HE1 fits better in a game where you are in a high-speed obstacle course, similar to a race car, so having everything lit up to be bright and colorful fit games like Unleashed and Gens and playing into that vibe of a over the top obstacle course with no real consequences (especially narrative-wise)

Forces and especially Frontiers, having that bombastic artstyle would not fit either story style (we can argue the effectiveness of Forces, but it is hard to deny they were setting up something gritty and dark), and Frontiers is more somber and down-to-earth compared to the wacky settings of the mid 2000/2010s games

So what you call flat, I argue is missing the point of what both styles are going for, and just labeling them as one thing is just criticizing because it is not this other thing that you DO like

I wouldn't really call lack of global illumination a stylistic choice. Raytracing or global illiuunation work especially well in darker areas I would say.

I'm talking more about tech and lighting here than general style. I'm fine with the style of the newer games but wish it was done better.

So you are calling for something that is known as a resource hog to improve the graphics for realistic lighting

Never mind that plenty of even 20 series cards struggle with RayTracing on it's own, how do you expect it to run on the PS4 and Xbox One? (And ESPECIALLY the Switch)

"Oh, just axe those versions", yeah, that is a good thing for sales. Just axe a viable platform to sell our games, artificially hindering sales and reach the game could make for something as fake as RayTracing for pushing the graphics, something Sonic was never really about, compared to something like Sony's exclusives

Yes, Nintendo needs to lock in with their new hardware, but to axe a version of the game for something as backwards as "muh RayTracing", is complete nonsense

Unleashed and Generations have baked global illumination that doesn't cost much performance. It's basically raytracing for static scenes at little cost.

And in a game that was already struggling to meet even decent performance metrics of 2008? Yeah, not a smart call

Generations ran completely fine on stuff like the xbox 360. The game runs okay even with old integrated graphics on PC.

Anyway, sorry for going off-topic for so long. I don't think this is gonna lead anywhere.
