Works fine for me so no that's not true.
Go to desktop mode and set shadows and reflections to low then set controller or keyboard to Xbox 360. Go back to game mode and start up as normal. It worked fine for me so fingers crossed it works for you but if not just experiment with the different versions of Proton.
The game should not be listed as verified, although it is playable once you get past the config screen.
It is my favourite Sonic game, a lot of fun to play, so it is worth the hassle.
That is so strange. It starts up and plays perfectly on both my normal Steam Deck and my Steam Deck OLED. The only other thing I can suggest is a Factory Reset.
