For example, you want to know where present-day Nottingham is on the game's map: go to Wikipedia and type "Nottingham," and click the article. Scrolling down briefly, there is a category that says, "Toponym." You click that drop-down and it says:
So now you go to the game map, and you find "Snotingaham," then change the name to "Nottingham" to suit your pleasure.
Really though, what you are effectively asking is, "how can I know the history of the lands of the British Isles, Ireland, Scandinavia, etc.?"
The only true answer to that, at the risk of sounding snarky to Post Modernist ears, is: "Study the subject."
We've grown used to having downloadable lists, fillable fields, apps and Alexa, but really, if you want to get into things like this, there is no substitute for simply immersing yourself in the context and subject matter itself.
There isn't always a quick, automated solution to things; and even if there is, that "solution" does not provide the fulfillment and edification of the old school approach. Getting to the destination is (or should be) more than half the experience, but nowadays people are obsessed only with instant gratification.
But where in the files pal ? I tried changing the names in-game but no dice. That would be silly anyway as I'd have to change them every time I played that way.
You can change the name of your armies too, btw, by clicking the same little icon next to their name, when at the overview panel.
In terms of changing all of the regional names at once, permanently, that's a full blown mod undertaking.
I could just say, "use PFM," but if you knew how to use that, you wouldn't be asking where the files were. In other words, you have to ask yourself: if you don't know about PFM, or how to find files, do you want to be modifying the game files? That's probably not going to work out too well.
I suppose you could follow up by asking, "okay so how do I do that safely and efficiently?"
Which would mean that you're asking, in effect, "how do I be a modder?" You'll have to get into that as a whole topic and endeavor in itself, just like with the stuff I was saying about the historical subject matter.
I would definitely give the game a whirl, even with the older names. It's honestly a very well designed and smooth playing title.
If you just put it outta mind, it won't be a problem: the regions are strategic factors, no matter what names they go under, and really, it's possible the play will actually go better if the names sound weird, because you won't be fixated on what that place means to you in the real world, but what it means within the context of the game world and your faction's situation.
