As Ernavill alludes to, the Ragnar stuff is supposed to have happened before the Great Heathen Army formed, when Northumbria was still a full Anglo-Saxon kingdom, and before an established Norse presence in Strathclyde, Pictland or Ireland.
So a Ragnar mod would need to change the world map situation quite a bit.
Some people like the more fantastic side of this era though, and there's nothing wrong with that imo.
On the other hand, I do get a kick out of how many people are into "Viking culture" right now. Ten years ago and prior basically no one talked about Norse culture or history, except Medieval history geeks. I thought it was on the wane because the History Channel: Vikings show was getting old; but then Last Kingdom came out, and now we have Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and it's kickstarted it again lol.
The Last Kingdom is superior to vikings from all points.I like that they show both sides not just look vikings are cool christians are baaaad. In vikings all people are just humping everyone because vikings are coool.Plus the actor who played Alfred...boy o boy he is perfect for the role.In vikings they put a weird ♥♥♥♥♥♥ as Alffred
The first seasons were very entertaining (even if they weren't exactly historically accurate), but after a few seasons the series quickly went downhill.
Story arcs were needlessly stretched out to the point of tediousness, battles and set-pieces became unnecessarily elaborate, and plot resolutions became exceedingly more anti-climactic.
But yeah, I'd rather watch the Last Kingdom several times over versus watch any season of History Channel: Vikings past the first one.
None of the shows compare to reading the old chronicles and ballads though ;)
None of that weird redemption ritual was in the books though. Yet another case of TV writers deviating from the source material for absolutely no good reason whatsoever (they probably think it is entertaining).
Anyone remember the WWII craze of the late '90s and early '00s ? Lol
