Why no historical battles?
Total War games have always had historical or Quest battles in previous titles, question is why are there no historical battles in this?

In my opinion it should have Edington, since it happens just before the start of the game and is vital to everything afterwards.

Thus, you could play Edington as Alfred or the Vikings before starting as either faction in the game.

This game (DCL) is stripped of many features. Boring boring boring.

Neither of you guys own the game. Why are you even in here all the time?

As for the lack of historical battles: keep in mind OP that Thrones is not a typical TW release. Thrones is not a flagship entry, but one of the "Saga" entries, meaning it is smaller scope and has less development resources allocated to it.

The historical battles take extra resources in map design, play testing and balance, as well as copy writing a narrative and then getting voiceover for it.

Eddington and Maldon should have been in though I feel. The game may be smaller in scope but it still wasn't cheap.

Something else to consider is that these battles were essentially won strategically.

Tactically, it was just two shieldwalls moving towards each other, which probably wouldn't make for a very engaging battle in a videogame.

At Edington, Alfred had succeeded in bringing heavy numbers to converge at the battle site, whereas the GHA was already breaking up as its sub-commanders considered their options. The Vikings do not seem to have expected the Anglo-Saxons to muster so effectively, or underestimated their enemy's resolve in melee, with the result being that they gave battle, which then was basically a grind between two shieldwalls that saw the GHA gradually worn down and overpowered.

Not much is known about Maldon, but it seems that the Viking force was not only significantly larger, but also much higher quality, with the vast amount of the English force being militia. So again, you could say it was basically decided before the first blow fell. The English found themselves brought to battle in a train of events, and the actual fight was basically the Vikings pushing forward, dispersing the militia, then surrounding the isolated English commander with his small amount of huskarls, wearing them down through sheer numbers.

Maldon would be an interesting map to play

More variation than in all the troll posts. It's like you guys are a hive mind. At least use some interesting vocab so you differentiate yourselves a little more.

Wasn't Maldon the one with the Viking commander asking to be allowed to cross a river or wetland or a bridge or something in order that the battle could be fought under more "honourable" conditions.

Actually Brunaburgh would allow CA a lot of artistic license as not much is known about that one either other than it was a grand coalition formed to oppose the rising power of Aethelstan. Supposedly it was the biggest battle ever fought in Britain (possible guesswork though as they admit to having very few facts).

You are correct on Maldon, it was a natural causeway between an island and a mainland. Good call on Brunaburgh

I love it, people still trying to convince themselves this game is worth more than a mod.
