2. Are you running Steam in Windows "Administrator" Mode? ( You should, unless you are on Mac/Linux/SteamOS
3. Deleting /AppData/Roaming/The Creative Assembly/Thrones of Britannia folder did the trick for some people...
This is part of my point - everything else I have installed just runs. Haven't had a game behave like this possibly since I was buying games to run on Windows 95. I should not have to do anything special to get this game to run.
@Adam: People should not have to set steam to run as admin to run games, there is something else wrong on a system where you have to do this.
For many people though, it is simply outdated drivers that are the problem: make sure both your chipset and vid card drivers are the latest, official releases.
Another relatively easy fix to try is to reinstall the DirectX and VisualC++ files that come with ToB. Go to your ToB folder, and search for "redist" and you'll come up with the 2013 and 2015 Visual installers, and then there is a DX folder with the DirectX installer. Run and reinstall all three of these.
For me, none of this solved the issue. The problem was two missing dlls, msvcr120.dll and msvcv120.dll. For whatever reason, running the Thrones installer wasn't placing these or addressing these right with my Windows.
When I manually placed the dlls in the ToB Data folder, the launcher worked and the game ran.
Really there should be some official developer response to this kind of issue. Mine was a brand new, fully updated PC and the only game not running was ToB. It would be like buying a cart, finding it didn't start and being asked by the dealer to get under the hood an check a load of stuff.
