Moving Units In Formation
So I choose a formation for my units. I want to move them while maintaining not only their relative positions, facing, and dimenions, but I also want their destination to be slightly forward and left of their starting destination. The Advanced Controls info says to 'hold LALT while right-clicking and dragging to drag the selected units while maintaining their dimensions.' This doesn't seem to work. If I do that, it totally drops the formation and makes the units completely unlike their current configuration. I remember doing something similar in Warhammer 1 that worked exactly as I'm trying to do. Can you not do that in this game?

Maybe make sure the formation is locked?

The group is locked if that's what you mean. I don't know how to lock a formation.

You need to put them in formation, then lock them into a group select, then lock them into a formation select. If they're formed initially on flat ground you can move them around in that formation. If they're formed on an elevation or even slightly bumpy ground their formation cursor will be jumbled up where ever you move it. It's a semi-bug and very bloody annoying.

How do I even set a formation in the middle of combat? I have the units selected and I go the formation options and it overlays on the display apparently what the result will look like, but doesn't allow me to do any adjustments other than clicking the button. It's taking all unit and turning resizing them to their narrowest front with trailing out their soldiers behind them. WTF?

On my laptop, I select the formation, they move into it, then I click the mouse button on a nearby spot on the map, and they move to it, and form up. Sometimes I do it backwards, gotta change it back, cause I am stupid.

I don't know if what Myrmidon says is true, it be nice to be able to stroll the map in formation. I've largely given up on this, it will only let you move a couple dozen yards forward at a time before messing the formation up, returning to the default long line. I'm not quite sure what he is saying to do, so he may very well be correct.

Some functions I once used on this game ToB is gone now, I remember being able to put my infantry under AI control and took command of my calvary.... but can't seem to be able to find the damn button for it now, frustrating.

You have the option of putting units under computer control. You do that and then select on an enemy and the computer will control that unit's attack. Supposedly. I tried this in the first battle of the game just as an experiment and my king was killed, so I have no idea what it did.

How do you lock them into a 'formation select?'

If you don't want to 'group' them to keep the same formation you can also select all the units you want and then hold Alt, then hold left click and you can drag the units to where you want, they will move in the same formation. Hold Control on top of that to turn the formation in the direction you choose.

Laptop, got a feeling that left click and drag won't work when I try it tonight without a external mouse.

Makes sense, why not just keep the controls like with Atilla where it worked easily for me.

Ctrl+G to lock formations

For precise movement of formations. Step 2 is usually not necessary but sometimes you need to force spacing to be maintained etc which seems to be what you need

1. Put the units in the desired formation
2. Group lock to maintain integrity
3. Select *whole formation*
4. Hold alt and drag the formation to its new position, using ctrl to rotate them if needed. Once you have your position chosen, release mouse button to run, or hold ctrl+release mouse button to walk

Takes some getting used to, but as long as they can path there, this is almost pixel perfect a lot of the time (although sometimes like any TW move it goes weird).
