although you could upgrade to a GTX 1080 for better performance in GPU intensive games like Space Engineers, although that i5 might struggle to keep up with it's Ti variant
RAM is good enough for gaming for now, you'll need to go 24 GB sooner or later though whenever games begin to gobble up more then 16 GB
i'm just on a puny Windows 7 Home Premium that HP made back in 2012, with a A6-3650 i can barely run SE in Solar System with a low with some medi graphical settings, no grids, can't imagine my FPS in this game
EDIT: i'm aiming to have this as a SE alternative after they did a update that destroyed sound for users who aren't using XAudio2_9(the most up to date one i have is 7)
Correct! I can play Doom Eternal at high settings (ultra being highest). It was one of the first games I tried after switching to Linux too, so that was a pleasant surprise, as I usually hear of Windows only games running poorly with Proton, even today.
Though I haven't checked what frames I actually get. It feels smooth enough to pass at least as an average of 60 FPS.
I have been thinking of getting a better CPU! There are some games that I would like to play, but the system requires are too high, even for the lowest recommendation. And some games (like Space Engineers and Garry's Mod) I like to mod too much, which the causes lag. (oh and SE doesn't seem to run well on Linux w/ Proton, at least for me, even without mods. I base my experience on when I still used W10 and played SE back then)
Graphics don't matter that much to me, though I do still check what the lowest recommendation is for that too, if even the lowest graphical settings are too high.
The problem is just my lack of knowledge and that my PC was pre-build. So I have no idea what parts of my PC could handle the change, or if this is a problem at all. I will look into it one day though.
In 2024, I would no longer recommend the GTX 1080, unless you can get it dirt cheap on Ebay. A RX 6600 would be slightly more capable, and where the ray tracing is weak on that AMD generation, the 1080 has none at all, For those who don't like AMD, a RTX 3060/12GB might be a better option. Or maybe a RTX 4060.
game actually doesn't get that much faster with most of the graphics options disabled, but even SE, or even some heavier games run better
one of the things I've noticed is most of the people who have good frames are usually on nivdia cards
at the least I'd love some less intensive graphics. I don't need graphics that look insanely good, I need a playable game
and debug options don't really make a difference
Now now, you need hardware that can play games, don't blame the software. You're trying to game with an integrated gpu vs a discreet dedicated gpu and that CPU is more of a workstation processor.
pair it with a actual GPU, even a GTX and tell me your framerate
then do a RTX and tell me your framerate
your integrated graphics are the thing holding back your frames
