I liked it very much. (That's why i decided to re-buy it)
The story gets much better. You know, the first chapter is basically nothing but tutorial and explanation of the setup.
But i remember a lot of really interesting plot twists.
Regarding your companions...
Did you even bother look into the menu?
Those two are just the first two.
There are many more to come over the course of the game.
As for it's linearity... what are you expacting?
This is a story driven RPG, not a sandbox like for example the Elder Scrolls games which sacrifice the quality of the story in favour of having always something to do.
The story of Jade Empire is as good as any other Bioware game.
And about the one of the best games evar-Thing: I read the same thing about Dragon Age 2 ...so there's that. Also your playtime on your profile suggests that you like Skyrim, but don't like Witcher 2 - I felt Skyrim (or every TES Game except Morrowind for that matter ) was garbage, but I love the Witcher-Series - so maybe our RPG-Tastes are a bit different.
Edit: I also had to giggle a bit when I read " good as any other Bioware game"
Now i'm curious, why whould you have to giggle?
And it's still a reasonalby good game, if not compared to other Bioware games.
But aside from DA2, they made titles like
Baldurs Gate, a great RPG.
Baldurs Gate 2 & BG2 Throne of Bhaal, the, in my opinion, the best western RPG ever made. Yes, i think it's even better than the Witcher 2.
Then you have Neverwinter Nights, very, very solid RPG.
The same with Dragon Age Origins.
Mass Effect, also a really great series.
Star Wars: Knights of the old Repuplic, the best Star Wars Story aside from the original movie trilogie.
The combat I found very slow to ramp up at first but does improve quite a bit as you improve your character over time.
If Dragon Age is a yardstick you use to define quality in RPGs since that time it is worth remembering that this game predates that and also as you've seen is very different from it.
As far as having a good story, it does and the combat does open up and get better with time. I enjoyed this game myself although it certainly shows its console roots in its interface and in its gameplay at times which for a long time PC player like myself was a noticeable thing. On that note, some might call this game streamlined, simplified or even dumbed down from traditional RPG fare and it is depending on what games you want to compare it to. In terms of traditional RPG elements this is no Baldur's Gate.
It just depends on how you want to look at the game. It does simplify character development. Combat is relatively simple. There is no loot to speak of and no equipment upgrades to speak of and these things may be seen as serious shortcomings to some. What it does have to offer though is a world that is a nice change of pace from the usual fantasy settings and a good story to tell and again the gameplay becomes a little more fun as your character develops.
If you were expecting Dragon Age in an Asian setting, this ain't it though.
