Jade Empire: Special Edition

Jade Empire: Special Edition

Win 8 users, beware! Game doesn't work... read details.
I had multiple issues starting from generic "Couldn't find steam" to crashing when starting. After I eventually got game working, it turns out saving doesn't work due to folder permission problems which are specific to Win 8. Run as Administrator (tried both steam and JE) didn't work for me, nor did modifying administrator privileges for executables or changing compatibility modes (tried all three of em). I also tried modifying save-folder from read-only to full control, and changed every possible permission but with no luck.

There *might* be some trick to get the game working, but given all the issues and multiple workaround requirements it's safe to say that there is no guarantee that this game will get working on Win 8 environment. Fortunately I gambled only ~2.9e for this tryout, and I might get game working on some older laptop eventually.

I had the same issue as Reaktor. I managed to troubleshoot this issue and now have 'Play Jade Empire Special Edition' working. This guide will help you get this working for yourselves.

1. Open a Command Prompt using the Run command or from the Metro Start screen by typing 'Command Prompt' and selecing it from the Apps category.

2. Change directory to your steamapps\common folder by issuing one of the following commands:

cd "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common"

- OR for 64-bit versions of Windows -
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common"

3. Take ownership of the 'Jade Empire' folder by issuing the command:

takeown /f "Jade Empire"

then

4. Permanently grant user rights and replace any previously explicit permissions by issuing the command:

icacls "Jade Empire" /grant administrators:F

5. Launch the game through steam and select 'Play Jade Empire Special Edition' - Note that the configure screen crashes and does not work with this method (settings can be changed in game anyway).

6. Have fun!

Looks like valid solution, though I haven't tried this out. Thanks for sharing. If someone tries before me, please comment.

I am running this game on windows 7, and i get "You do not have a valid Steam subscription for this application [AppId=7110]." Would the command prompts work for me?

I am unaware of the specific error you mention, however the steps that I listed should not affect your setup in any harmful way and could work- perhaps you could try them and post feedback?

I would suggest making a backup of the game files prior to trying. Good luck.

The problem is not Windows 8 per se, its that your running a 64-bit OS (the exact same thing happened to me running Win7 64 and the same fix worked for me with Win8 PRO 64-bit) and Steam is by default installed in a different location than the game was setup to look for it......The simple fix is to go into -ADVANCED SYSTEM SETTINGS- (just type it in the search its under settings) then hit the -Environment Variables- button near the bottom of the window. Now in the Environment Variables window go to the lower box marked -System variables- and look for the one variable called -Path- (not PATHTEXT) click it and hit your end key to get to the end of the list and add an ; (simicolon) NOW the important part, type in your steam install location (default is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam) now -RESTART YOUR PC- and now it should work....However you will have to launch the game from steam

If I was not clear enough here is where I got the fix (http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=26798133&postcount=4)

As for the Config Menu crashes they are random in Win7 and 8 and trying to open it again will (eventually) work

And the "folder permissions" issue you bring up is not effecting me nor three of my friends who have the game on Win8 perhaps you either misunderstood or were misled about this

Mosiah13442 thank you for providing the information about setting the PATH variable; as I had not found a solution to the problem I found one myself without any external help. I willl assume the link you mentioned works well for more than Jade Empire Special Edition as it affects ALL 64-bit installtions.

Cheers

I'm using 64-bit Windows 8 and I don't have any problems saving the game. (I had the problem of starting the game, but fixed it by renaming the .exe)

I appreciate the tips you guys are giving, though. I'll try them out with a different game that is giving me similar trouble.

True, but if the game is already installed one might as well just use the PATH fix

Create a blank file with Notepad and save it as SystemInformation.xml in C:\Program Files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\jade empire\data. Attempt to run the config program and it still crashes. Next, attempt to run the main game and it skips the config and actually starts and plays without issue .!! ( WORKED FOR ME WINDOWS 8 64Bit)

Never had problems with Jade Empire. Ran it in Windows 7 and 8 64-bit. usually the config file trick and running everything in Admin. did the trick

Reaktor, have you've been able to get this game to work? I just purchased the game and tried everything mentioned in the forums on Steam and other sites and nothing has worked. I'm also using Win 8.
