Odd Controller Defaults and Issues. [ALL FIXED]
What is the easiest fix? Get an "Xbox 360 *Wired* Controller"! I had absolutely no problems, did not have to alter drivers, or anything; just plug it in, set device as default, and every issue was resolved.

Edit:
Even the Start button can skip cutscenes and the rumble functions on the wired controller, not the case on wireless.

Quickly toggling between styles (interupting animations) can cause the character to no longer tumble. If this happens, attack, then tumble should be restored, if not then try with a weapon.

----------------Read Below for "Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers"----------------------

Below, is the OP regarding "Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers"; what a mess that was. Consider the information archived to help other people. Scroll down to the "Details Below" section for all default issues.

Menu's in-game mapping controls do not recognize either trigger as custom inputs; they normally cannot be re-mapped for target cycling and menu tabbing; the triggers were originally intended for both functions. If they are externally forced (.INI edits), they are virtually useless (see below).

Notes:

The two triggers are recognized for camera control (X Axis), but these are incorrect defaults. I say, "wtf was someone thinking?" and "Why can't I re-map them?"

Directly editing the .INI file, then going into the game's re-mapping screen, will show that LT and RT can be forced into the correct locations. However, doing so leads to new issues where the triggers repeat the command too quickly and cause the commands to flicker (and even reverse direction).

If someone else is having controller problems, see below for easy workarounds (in game re-maps). I'm pasting in .INI edits also, which are helpful, since I've seen the game alter controls after starting a new game/character.

Directly editing .INI may cause confusion in game, so back it up first. It seems best to wipe save games, edit file, then start fresh games. This is in regard to targeting, menu tab, free look, no lock.

Those marked with " * " have been resolved, even if the fix is less than ideal.

I'm still working on the controller issues, but could use some help.

I just found a link with orgininal Xbox config, plus more helpful info. It has virtually every fix I've needed; example: Only use FSAA=1 (AA x2), others cause hang on black-screen upon exit. See: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Jade_Empire#Issues_fixed

Controller Type: Xbox 360 Wireless

-------------------------------------------Details Below---------------------------------------------------

Default Thumb-Stick Settings (Issues and fixes included):

Move L/R = Left Stick X
Move U/D = Left Stick Y
Look L/R = Left Stick Z (Camera does not function with stick, until re-map of RS as X*)
Look U/D = Right Stick Z (Camera doesn't move up & down, until re-map of RS as Y*)

Note: PC version only has inverted look-up, not down, and no FOV zoom either

Other Default Settings (Issues and fixes included):

Feature:............Issue:
Camera (L,R)*...Default is "actually" Right Trigger & Left Trigger (*Look L/R is RS as X)
Target Cycle*.....Default is Back & Start, rather than LT & RT (*fix/map: Press RS & LS)
Menu Tab*.........Default is Back & Start, rather than LT & RT (*fix/map: Press RS & LS)
Free Target*......Default is Back+Start buttons, instead of LT+RT (*fix/map: Press RS+LS)
Pause*..............Default is not mapped, rather than the Back button (*fix/map: Back)
Menu*...............Default is not mapped, rather than the Start button (*fix/map: Start)
Triggers...........Not recognized for re-maps; fix is not reasonably functional
Triggers...........Not recognized for re-maps; fix is not reasonably functional

------------------------------------------------.INI Changes---------------------------------------------

In Game Re-maps, this works the best so far:
This is what the .INI looked like, after re-maps; archiving it here for copy/paste.

Default Filepath (less quotes):
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Jade Empire"

[Controller (Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows)]
Movement L/R=Left StickX
Movement U/D=Left StickY
Look L/R=Right StickX
Look U/D=Right StickY
Menu=Button 8
Combat Pause=Button 7
Fight Style 1=Hat 1
Fight Style 2=Hat 1
Fight Style 3=Hat 1
Fight Style 4=Hat 1
Attack=Button 1
Block=Button 2
Strong Attack=Button 3
Focus=Button 4
Chi Strike=Button 5
Chi Heal=Button 6
Target Left=Button 9
Target Right=Button 10
No Target=-
Free Look=Button 10

-------------------------------

External/Direct .INI Edits:
The following edits do actually function; however, the game reads repeat-inputs and flickers commands too quickly, as described above.

Possible fix for repeat inputs? Maybe a program like JoyToKey could change the timing?

Two lines were edited to include the missing LS and RS Z axes.

Target Left=Left StickZ
Target Right=Right STickZ

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temporary, note to self: Set PresentImmediate=1 to fix robe/outfit glitch if FSAA=1

Visi,
THANK YOU! The "Xbox 360 *Wired* Controller" is incredible, wireless is horrible.

It's a bit hard to make out how you're saying to type these in the config. I'm not sure if i'm opening up the Notepad to configure these by "pressing" the buttons on the controller or if i'm actually supposed to type "RS" or something on the corresponding lines. Can you please just take a picture of your INI or upload your INI? This is too confusing.

Editing config files is done with the keyboard and mouse, within Windows Explorer.

Once within the config files, those lines show all of my experimental editing, which never worked out.

[FIX]: Visi's fix functioned perfectly back then; just use the old XBox 360 *wired* controller.

I have not had JE on my system since 2016, so no image.

Thanks for posting this. After happily using this game with a wired 360 controller for a while, I just tried with a DualShock 4 and an Xbox X controller. Much to my disappointment, neither of these wireless controllers were mapping at all correctly. I think it's the same as with the wireless 360 controller you documented.

Knowing the pitfalls of manually remapping, I think I'll just continue to use the wired controller. Too much trouble otherwise.
