Well, I'd argue that Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 are still rather different beasts as well. Modern ARPGs are more like Diablo 2 than Diablo 1, I'd argue. So there was still a gap and lots of progression between the two installments - and plenty of other studios experimenting with the recipe from Diablo 1.

At least Souls games have a lot of unique weapons and Armors.. DS3 did not...
