What kind of sad and pathetic life must you live to not realize that?
Anyway, definitely agree that the savepoint system is an anachronistic nuisance. I too had to leave 30 minutes in, wrongly assuming that there was some sort of AutoSave. Once you know, the issue becomes smaller, because dialogues are mostly for flair anyway, and even the required ones can be fast-forwarded over, so I haven't yet been forced to redo stuff in a manner, that would take a relevant amount of time.
What I really don't get however, is who could have thought that hiding the save-points behind unlocks would be a good idea. Essentially they're telling people who have to leave for real-life reasons, that they can't, even though there's a save-point right next to them.
A recurring theme in the game; It is fun in the end, but it is pretty good at hiding it at first behind offputting technicalities.
Truth is they really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up this game. The longass wait for the first savepoint is just one of many mistakes from the designers. I went up to 2 hours in my first playthrough to get to the first save point.
Edit: It took less than 20 minutes to get back to where I was +save the game. They could have introduced this save thing much earlier; the crystal ball is right at the start of the game, but you have no idea how to interact with it (kind of obvious it's for saving... would have liked some 4th wall breaking confirmation when trying to use it back then.)
