It does this in a way that creates worse art, which is further scraped by AI, to generate increasingly lower quality AI slop, that further enshittifies the internet.
Can't is probably a better term than won't here, as I've been following this game for a long time and was excited to be a day 1 early access buyer to help the developers fund their vision, but I'm now not able to do that as I don't want to contribute to the above issues.
And in the sense that yes I believe people should be compensated for their work then yes I agree with some of the beliefs of the Luddite movement.
It's worth noting the devs have already said the artwork was based on their own artists creations passed through an A.I filter, so in this case I would say there's already a meat medium involved in the process that already received some kind of monetary compensation?
Beyond that, the whole *funding* bit, if they're already strapped for cash and forced to release into EA to help cover continued development, where exactly are they supposed to come up with the money to hire additional artists at this juncture? (Maybe by EA selling copies?)
If it comes down to a game going with ai assisted art and still seeing a 1.0 release, or turning into abandonware with everyone who backed it left with empty pockets and pile of shovelware, I'd much rather see (and support) the title that will actually turn into a final product then the one that'll leave everyone unhappy, devs included.
The artists scraped to power Midjourney weren't compensated however.
They also stated that they will potentially revisit replacing these assets with non-AI art, based on feedback. I'd really like to see this game succeed. I'm super disappointed I don't get to play it currently.
Don't you mean "Choose not to play it?" Nothing stopping you from playing it and giving the devs that extra cash they need to actually replace the assets with non AI art.
Help me understand why should these devs get blamed for Midjourney's decisions? It's not as if they are responsible for how Midjourney runs their business.
I explained above why I use the word "can't" but sure if it's important to you we can change the language to "choose". I've explained my reasoning above already.
To put it another way: if I pay for something that I feel makes art & the internet worse, I would feel bad while playing it.
Sure, AI art is not good enough for now, but you pay not for make art worse, but quite opposite.
We all get to draw our own lines. I've come around to accepting it as a tool in the pipeline, but for me the line is when its used to create a final product.
