Dead State succesor?
I was in love with Dead State, unfortunately it's dead... but your game looks quite similiar

@devs what would you say are your biggest pros compared to that title?
Do you see your game as a spiritual successor?

Even if this is the first game of the studio your individual vita is quite good, but are you realy just 2 guys, or do you also work with outsourcing and contract members?

I'm thrilled to see more as soon as you have more to show.

DS was a great inspiration. So was JA. But we built USG as a game that stands on it own feet.

DS for us was an excellent example of what works and what doesn't when it comes to zombies and TBS. We tried to use the good stuff and find solutions to what didn't work there (see the new unique zombie turn as an example).

We are not just 2 guys, Razvan and Alex are the founders and the most experienced of us but there is more of us. Although by today's standard we are a tiny indie studio, we are about a dozen developers, each with lots of years of experience in his field. And what we can't do inhouse, we contract - again - to some very talented and experienced devs from the local market.

PS: Did you see the new PC Gamer article?

Yeah I gotta say initially I too found it a little odd that very little marketing or even that PCGamer article mentioned the obvious parallels to Dead State rather than JA2, which seems more like the immediate go-to on paper. However seeing it in action between the AP system, UI, Bandaging, familiar intuitiveness of mechanics here and there like interruptions etc. it very quickly resembled good old JA2.

Luckily both JA2 and DS are pretty high on my all-time best lists, so this one will no doubt deliver and I'm pretty keen to learn more and see what this MicroProse partnership will ultimately be able to provide. :steamhappy:

Why not have the best of the both worlds, right?

It is so nice to see JA2 gets to be mentioned again. Was waiting for something like that game for too long. XCOM type of TB combat was somehow interesting but it usually did not have much dept . This game looks more then promising ...

Also I'm old enough to remember Microprose, seeing the logo somehow moved me :)

Thank you @mocnijogurt!

We felt the same, the XCOM combat has been used and abused lately as if that was the only option. But the classics of the genre were always three, not one: X-COM, JA2 and Fallout. Nevermind games like Dead State that came later and carved a niche for themselves.

We will not make another JA2, USG is USG and nothing else, but we'll do our best to make the JA2 player feel at home in our game.

Good luck to you guys, I loved Dead State despite its flaws so if you're taking what it's done and improving on it you've got a guaranteed buyer right here.

Thank you! We do have some ideas you will find interesting in that aspect. And better zombie combat is just one of many.

X-COM, JA2 and Fallout - my personal holy trinity :) The best thing is to do your thing, with your ideas, with some concepts from these games. The results I saw on your YT channel is really impressive, I must say the hype is strong in me right now :)

literally every game in my top 5 mentioned as inspirations,This is probably the game i am waiting for most in last few years. Get this right and people could be talking about it in 20 years the way people are still talking and playing ja2

Yes. JA2 is the undisputed king of tactical strategy games in my book. I always found it strange that no one managed to even touch the mighty JA2. All the so called sequels were utter failures on every level.

i felt dead state zombie combat was missing one major thing that would have made it much haerder aka enjoyable. zombies surrounding a person should STACK their strength. so figthing one zombie at a time, not a big deal. three lined up? should be seriously bad. while, more should be disasterous.

To be fair If memory serves you had a much greater chance of being successfully grappled/knocked to the ground and piled on when grabbed from the side or back, so in effect fighting a group solo was pretty suicidal.

Although I do remember the armour ratings in that being pretty imbalanced toward the end, so with full riot gear+shield etc. you would barely even take damage from a group nomming on you on the ground. :lunar2020thinkingtiger:

I know that comparisons can be annoying at times, but one of the things I love about Dead State is the diversity of NPCs.

Each of them has its own history, personality, fight among themselves and etc. Some are good people, others are potential psychopaths. You really feel like these are normal people trying to survive an apocalypse. I wonder if I can expect the same care with NPCs in your game? But anyway, I'm really excited about Urban Strife, good work guys.

Yep, we have a diverse world, with people from various walks of life, various ages, faction alignment and so on.

Maybe one major difference in USG vs DS is that the RPG will be more focused on pleasing the larger groups/factions rather than individuals with various cravings.

"I'm really excited about Urban Strife (...)" [2]

Me too, is good to see new games of the genre.
