Inertial controls
How do you like the control in this game? After a while I found it much more comfortable to leave the IDS off all the time, I basically only use it to stop. I remapped my main accelerate/decelerate keys to inertia up and down, and use convenient strafe left/right and up/down keys. It uses much less fuel and higher speeds are the norm.

I do the same thing. FYI, you can increase your IDS speed with the number 9 key on the keypad. To decrease the IDS multiplier just use the number 7 key. I do a lot of combat contracts and I only use IDS to loot the containers.

I use IDS most of the time, don't see much problem with it. I know how to increase the scale.

I am highly satisfied with the controls in this game. The only times when I use the IDS is when I try to regain control of the ship after a critical combat maneuver, in races and when landing on a planet.
Still every now and then when I feel like it I turn it on as well. Just for the fun of it ^^.

The inertia physics is probably my favourite part of this game so far. I also rarely used the IDS once I got the hang of it (and ideal pre-fulcrum-jump compass headings), it does see use in atmosphere of course, and as a "brake".

For those that don't know, what I mean by ideal compass headings is, that if you point your ships heading at 0 or 180 degrees on the compass, and at "level" (0) on the HUD tape, before you jump, you will almost always (that I've seen so far) be able to float right into dock in inertia mode without any adjustments. This is also the case for gates, although some of them will be facing the other way, requiring a compass heading of 90, instead.

Interesting, I did not know that! I'll have to give that a try cause I am all over the place trying to find the docking sweet spot.

Thanks for the tips on docking!

Dock at station with a jump.
1. Turn the ship so the ladder (vertical compass) is at zero.
2. Direct the ship so it is moving farward (or else when jump the ship maintain it's direction so when you jump it will not go forward).
3. Open the map and right click on the station you wanna dock.
4. Jump.

For gates is the same but with the difference that you must put your horizontal compass at 0 or 180 degrees (because in stations you can dock 360 but in gates only from 0 or 180 degrees.

The game is amazing....

The problem with the IDS for me is the max speed. You can burn up to a pretty fast speed but if you leave your IDS on it will slow you down to the max. But in full inertial mode it's not uncommon for me to zip around at 3-4k.

Anyone know how the fuel usage compares? Is it the same to use your burner to get to 4k as it is to use inertia up?

You can increase your maximum IDS speed two ways, by using a higher tiered engine, and by increasing the IDS Multiplier. By default, for me, that was set to Numpad 7, and Numpad 9 to increase and decrease it respectively. The multiplier allows you to get away with running with a low-end engine to free up assembly points, really. The option is on page three of the keybindings, if you wish to change/set the keys. Some other useful IDS keys are: backspace, to cut the speed to 0, and the 0 (zero, non-numpad) key to throttle up immediately to your current maximum. I don't think those two can be re-bound, but I could be wrong.

Fuel usage wise, afterburners do use more fuel than both the IDS and inertial thrusters/throttle. How much, exactly, I can't say, but it will depend a fair bit on your engine, as well. Anecdotally, I have noticed that with heavier ships, a low end engine and a decent wing system, the thrusters and inertial throttles end up feeling faster than the afterburner in addition to being more fuel efficient.

As an addition to the jumping into dock discussion: Once you reach warzones, you can jump right into the Carriers with a heading of 180, to dock at the open rear ship bay.

This has kept me from crashing into places several times; thank you.
