In all seriousness, though, the game is incredibly fun. It is very basic, and $25.00 is a little pricey (though that seems to be the standard for VR games), but I would say it's worth it. I am an avid Vocaloid fan and I think the song selection is pretty solid. There are only 8 songs, but they are actually newer, relevant songs as opposed to the same songs they have in every game or concert (with the exception of Ievan Polkka even though it is a remix in this game).

As far as negatives/"bugs" go, there are a few. There is only one outfit for Miku even though all of of the Vocaloid rhythm games (even the IA and Gumi ones) have multiple outfits, or in the case of Future Tone, hundreds. When you are choosing which stage (song) to play it gives you a preview of the song while also playing the menu music so it is overlapping. There is no retry feature for when you are in the middle of a song that is normally there in the Project Diva games (or any rhythm game, for that matter). When you hit the notes with your controller you don't actually see them because you have to keep your hands low while also looking in front of you to see where the notes are coming from which leads to sometimes missing notes just because your hand was a little off (though I could just be bad). And I also encountered a glitch where if you press the home button when it is loading a song the game will freeze and you are forced to restart it.

The game is definitely not perfect (even though I would love to say it is), but it is still a great rhythm game. Hopefully CFM will continue to update it with content or even DLC (like songs, outifts, more than ~4 stages, and even other Vocaloids) so that it may one day rival even the great Project Diva games themselves.

I got this because I'm a big fan of the Project Diva games. I expected this to be of similar quality and length, but this feels like more of a VR concept demo than a full game. There's only 10 songs and everything is available from the start. It's also painfully easy. I got it on sale and still think I paid way too much for it.

Hatsune Miku VR / 初音ミク VR. It is a VR Music game created by Crypton Future Media and published by Degica Games. Crypton Future Media, the development company making sound sources for VOCALOID that is a virtual singer in your computer and is a singing voice synthesizer software, is well known in the Japanese subculture field. Several vocaloids have been active so far, but Hatsune Miku is still one of the most famous vocaloid characters ever since her debut in 2007. Finally she landed on Steam, but it's a VR game. Can we enjoy it well? Let's take a look at it with Nyanco-chan! (ฅ'ω'ฅ)


Except for collaboration events, user mods or MikuMikuDance(MMD), it is not easy to meet Hatsune Miku in the game. Probably the most important meaning of the game is that players can play with Hatsune Miku in the PC version on Steam. In other words, the gameplay may not meet your expectations. This game Hatsune Miku VR is somewhat experimental compared to the Hatsune Miku -Project DIVA- series where you play and check them in the console titles.

You simply put on your headset and choose a song then use your VR controllers to catch the melody symbols flying from the speakers at the back of the stage. However, these gameplay processes are somewhat repetitive, not optimized, and the rhythm note sync is poor. Also there are only a few songs. The gameplay itself is rather coarse. Nonetheless, the anime character modeling, singing, and dancing quality are pretty good. Vocaloid songs in particular go well with Hatsune Miku's dance and vibe.

Fortunately, the update allows Non-VR players to activate the Music Video mode. It means you can partially enjoy Hatsune Miku VR game even without a VR device. To activate the music video for the Non-VR mode, you should have a base game and Hatsune Miku VR-5 songs pack 1 (DLC). If you have met that requirement, just type [LoveMiku] in the main menu. The game automatically enter the music video mode. That's great news, especially for Hatsune Miku fans, and it's definitely worth a collectible.


Hatsune Miku VR / 初音ミク VR. It's a meaningful title that you can officially meet Hatsune Miku on Steam. However, it cannot be denied that it is somewhat experimental that it chose the VR rhythm action genre. Besides, the gameplay itself is a bit rough. Fortunately, updates have been added to allow you to experience the game content partially even if you are a non-VR player. If you are a Hatsune Miku fan and love collecting games, this game will be well worth it. Each user may have different ways to enjoy game content. For someone, collecting games can be more enjoyable than gameplay. Nevertheless, if the game fully supports Non-VR mode in the future, and adds more content (such as songs), the game will definitely be better than it is now.

I'm a simple man. I see Miku, I buy.

So I'm refunding this game, but before I do I want to post my thoughts about this for anyone else thinking of maybe giving this a try.

Basically this is the most half-assed VR rhythm game I've ever played that cost more than $5. I've seen some pretty lame attempts at VR rhythm games before but nothing with anything as high profile as "Hatsune Miku" in it. I'm sure there's gonna be a lot of angry fans of Hatsune Miku after reading this review, but in my opinion the one they should be mad at are the devs of this "game"

The graphics themselves aren't bad, but they're nothing special. You get to stand on stage with Hatsune Miku doing some dance steps and singing while an array of speakers spit out Music notes that you have to touch with your "star wands". If you hit the note the controller vibrates a bit and if you miss the note you hear a sound. Why is this important? Because the way the "speakers" are arranged, the notes come out in such a way that you would have difficulty in following with your eyes. Your best bet is to stare straight ahead and then try to react to the notes as they pass by without turning your head. If you DO turn your head to see more clearly, you're likely to miss the next note coming out.

There's a tutorial but it's laughably simple and doesn't even explain the "Fever meter" or how to engage it. I still don't know for sure what it does or why I should worry about it. I did figure out that when you pull the trigger button it changes the background into some spacey/cyber looking thing, but other than that I have no idea what was the point. I assume there were extra points during this phase but I didn't see anything that made that point obvious.

Other than the difficulty in seeing the notes, the game itself is remarkably simple, but not in a good way. Another VR rhythm game, Airtone, has similar qualities, but they make sure it feels like you're in control and the targets are all arranged where you can easily see them. For Airtone the difficulty comes from the number of notes and the different ways to hit them. For Hatsune Miku VR? There's really only one way to hit anything and the sheer number of notes coming out at once is your difficulty.

I guess I'm most upset at the fact that there didn't seem to be any real rhythm involved. Just move your arms around to catch the notes and that's it. Beat Saber has you slicing the targets to the music but imagine if you just held out the sabers and let the boxes run into them? Doesn't sound like much fun does it? That's what you're getting here.

Now if you're a big Hatsune Miku fan they give you two Hatsune Miku Skins (I guess so you can play multiplayer and distinguish between each one?) and you can change the star wands into a leek for those people who want to leekspin all day, every day. There's some different backgrounds you can choose, and there's a lot of songs you can choose too (including 15 DLC Songs broken into 3 different DLC song sets). If you're a hardcore fan, maybe this is enough. Oh and I nearly forgot, there's a mode where you can watch a "music video" of Miku singing the song.

Honestly, I'm not a big Miku fan, so none of this really mattered to me. I was willing to give it a shot, and originally I didn't even know there was a game to it. I figured it was another virtual concert type thing and finding out there was a rhythm game to it made me hopeful that it was gonna be good. It's just the game itself was pretty lackluster, and without being a fan of the vocaloid scene, it really wasn't enough for me.

I would hope the devs would take this criticism and work on making the rhythm game more robust. Instead of merely waving wands around, maybe you could have different colored notes so that different hands had to hit them. Maybe you could make it so you had to click a button in time with the music to get more points. Maybe you could make it so that there were more music note types that required a bit of skill (without going overboard). Maybe instead of spamming out 10 notes in a row you could make it one long note that had to be "held" the whole time instead of passively holding the wand in place?

There's lots of ways this could be improved. If they ever do release an update to the game mechanics I'd be interested in trying it again. I just don't think it's worth the money right now, and I bought it on sale. Maybe if it was on sale for $5 (and $1 DLC) I'd have shrugged it off and moved on, but with $40 for the game + 3 DLC, I think I can do better for my money... You can too.

I'm not hating on Hatsune Miku... I think this game could have done more with the license.

As a rhythm game the core of the gameplay is flawed. The game just throws random notes at you, with no regard to the music, and has Miku blocking part of the incoming notes.
It's just a game about putting you hands in the right position while music plays and Miku dances in front of you, to the detriment of the gameplay.

- gameplay is very basic, even in hard mode. I tought I was buying a kind of "Audioshield", but it doesn't stand the comparison ;

- one outfit, no customisation. Playrooms look cool and huge though ;

- only 8 songs ?!?

Conclusion : too expensive for the content, and not fun to play. Very disapointed. They are selling the franchise name, not a real game.
