HAWKEN REBORN

HAWKEN REBORN

Is the game really THAT bad?
I'm not familiar with the original Hawken, I have no nostalgia or anything. A lot of the negative reviews to me seem to be "new thing bad, old thing good" with the occasional technical issues review sprinkled in.

So like, is the game actually bad or are people just mad the new thing isn't exactly the same as the old thing?

both

Imagine playing Ghost recon phantoms and it comes back looking like Planetside 2 and with "sci-fi" weapons.

I've really enjoyed my time with this game, it's got issues for sure but hopefully those issues get addressed. I really prefer PVE games.

I think a lot of the backlash has come from the fact the original was a PVP shooter, it did have PVE Co-Op modes but the heart was PVP from what I've heard.

So doing a follow up without that has caused some disappointment. I do feel bad for the PVP fans though, the mods on the discord are saying that PVP modes might be considered so hopefully both sets of fans can have the gameplay they desire.

It's more accurate to say it's a bare bones game. There's nothing to be engaged with as the dev team themselves are trying to figure out how to flesh out the game, and its presentation. There's not much challenge, or any systems to engage with in its gameplay aside from grinding. It's story is a nothing burger, and their cutscenes use AI art.

TDLR; barely a game right now. God knows how it'll turn out.

It feels unfinished even for solo play.
Progression isnt really satisfying either so youre likely to get bored before receiving upcoming updates to the gameplay loop and new content.

Theyd probably be better off launching a token PvP mode sooner and leave campaign mode the training-type side content. There's no need to think balance if you release 'mirrored' maps (where both opposing sides are the same so no unbalance) and a single mech model all players initially use (no balance issue, only skill makes a difference until new mechs are added and strategies start to get varied).

BOTH

I played a lot PVE mode with old Hawken. Even if PVE modes were very limited and repetitive, it was still far more enjoyable than it is now.

If you played enough FPS, you'd notice that this action-shooting game kinda failed on action and shooting. The gap is so clear if you've tried the old Hawken.

Original Hawken did great on action and shooting, even with it's first close-alpha build. <--that was over a decade earlier than this "early" access. They own the old game and all the code, but still.

I mean, this is not the worst game ever, but with this IP, it's freakin terrible.

I haven't played either of those so unfortunately, I don't really get it.

It looks like "this is PVE" was clear enough, so it's not as if people got bamboozled or anything right? This isn't like, reverse Overwatch 2 where they went "lmao we said we'd add PVP but we're not" right? The complaints don't seem that justified. It'd be like complaining that Megaman Legends isn't the same as regular Megaman, or something.

Sounds like it was released too early? Also sounds like the devs loved their Hawken baby and wanted to bring it back, but had no idea how. The game us free though, so it's not as if anyone got ripped off at least?

Yeah, sounds like it came out too early. Hopefully some new content will inject some life back into the game.

Action shooting? Like... Doom or something?

If you have played the old hawken maybe you'll get it a little bit.
Or watch some old hawken clips and compare to the new hawken.

The original was SOUL. The art direction did wonders with UE3, looked amazing, played really well as a deathmatch arena shooter, and had potential due to the gameplay design. People don't mention how it played often: It was a mix between Halo-ish and quake-ish gameplay, where rockets and proyectiles would play a great deal in damage, and hitscan combos and such. There were bubble shields and powerups and arena control stuff. Also sounded and looked great, the movement, the pacing and the TTK were good.

What it suffered was lack of vision. After what I said, sadly, there was not much to unlock or look forward to. As good as it was, it had no monetization scheme worth spending. People loved it, but still moved on.

The PvE idea is actually a good idea, but not like this. This isn't HAWKEN at all, plays nothing like it, and it's not mainly PVP. All i've said above isn't here and will never be here. Just from looking at the first map vs the OG maps you'll realize the soul is gone, the vision of the world is gone, and no one in this dev team even played the original, or even liked it in the first place. Its using the skin of the old game, and the name, but has nothing similar.

And if the new thing was at least different but good. But it's just not. As it is, it's a reminder of how we will never get the chance to play OG HAWKEN with the boys and frag people again.

pretty much this, it's the root cause and anything anyone says otherwise is really a lie as it all circles back to the fact it ain't the old thing.

Originally there was tutorial teaching you to dodge a rocket projectile. Or teaching player to manually detonated your rocket. Those tricks later turned into some mech gun-fu moves.

so yeah, definitely some action.

I donno other entries, but I saw some similar vibes in when I had my time with 2016 Doom.

i played the original, i liked it back than but i'm not at all interested in pvp games today. coop vs AI, yeah, but i'm completely fine with singleplayer. so i like hawken reborn being a singleplayer game. i'd prefer to see the game being sold for like 30€, maybe some cosmetic dlcs and big content dlcs later on and the grind being removed. i don't know how it is after todays patch but it was really grindy and that's on purpose to make money by selling that premium currency.

I have no idea why they keep calling it PvE. It's singleplayer at the moment and PvE is on the roadmap. You are connecting to a server but you're alone, playing 6 missions until you get to the deep grind in a repetitive fashion. I mean the things free, but until the next patch delivering more gameplay, I would not waste my time with the title. It's just way too early to go public with the title. It feels unfinished in so many ways, yet the store for currency works.

If feels unfinished because it is, that is why is an early access. But yeah after doing the 6 missions and 1 or 2 patrol runs there is not much to do until we get more content
