Not quite, what screwed it was poor balance and pay to win, PvP in and of itself didn't kill the game, and PvE won't save it, the OG game already had a PvE mode lol
As for where it goes, i'm predicting pretty much nowhere, there are vastly superior co-op games out there if you want that sort of thing, i don't see much of a market for this
I'm not the type to yell "It's in early access you guyz!" but jesus, people are dumping on it for like the smallest reasons...
There is always a market for games like this, because the competition is centered on PVP only. And when it comes to mech coop games, there's basically one and that has it's fare share of missteps. Here's a game that is delivering the story the OG forgot to pack despite marketing itself like is was rife with. You get decent sized campaign missions at the start (six currently) and you have a neat idea going with the Patrol Mode which can and mostly like will be expanded on. But the only way to do that is to give proper feedback. There's plenty of PVP centered mech games, there isn't however something like this and is free to play.
At least the tutorial was entertaining and I didn't feel like it was treating me like I'm an idiot. It gave you the basics, but still allowed you to freely go about the combat and movement. Few tutorials in F2P games do this.
I usually uninstall games where I can't skip cutscenes. I want to game, not watch a movie
It'll take a few hours to get to level 25? I don't think so. And PVP isn't essential right now as it'd be wiser to have a more competent and fleshed out open world/content than PVP will save the game, fallacy.
it's more like hawken fans are upset because this is only hawken in name
Why I am not enjoying Hawken Reborn:
1. The art style and overall feeling of the game is completely different, the old game had maps and art style that looked quirky, weird, cool and kind of creepy. Here is an example of one map from the old Hawken game that looked really cool IMO and looks better than everything in Hawken Reborn combined:

This is the map in action:

Hawken Reborn on the other hand has this very boring looking open world map that doesn't look interesting or appealing, it reminds me of those Battle Royale games that have a map that looks so generic and boring as if it was randomly generated by some program and then some buildings and other assets were placed on top.
2. There is no PvP in Hawken Reborn. Yes, that was the only thing I remember playing on the old Hawken game, I don't even know if it had other game modes or who even played them. For me the experience in Hawken was fighting against other players and earning currency so I can unlock better parts for my mecha and explore new strategies and approaches to be a better player. If the original Hawken was just PvE, it would have never succeeded and nobody would have played it.
PvP adds this near-infinite replay value to a game, because each match you meet new people and they play differently so you never have the same experience twice.
What sucks about the lack of PvP is that the old Hawken had PvP. Why take it away for no reason? It's what people enjoyed doing. When I heard there was a new Hawken game, I was excited, but when I found out there will be no PvP, I immediately became really disappointed, even more so when I found out the game doesn't even function offline and yet you can't interact with other players. The fact that they took PvP away when it was previously there is a d*ck move, at least if they said "we will add it later", it would've been better.
3. The PvE in Hawken Reborn is boring. I almost fell asleep and forced myself to go through all the missions when it was in the 2nd mission that I was already bored out of my head. The gameplay in the missions is absolutely boring and repetitive. All of this just so you can get some chunks of information about a story you don't even care about, because the intro or anything else made a very poor presentation of what's going on so I could not care about the main character or who he/she is.
The missions consist of you going into an area, then enemies spawn, you kill them in the most repetitive and boring way so you can move further. The infantry feel like ants, they barely do anything, the drones feel like flies you're swatting and the enemy mechas are just so predictable and easy to destroy that it's not even thrilling. Overall, all enemies just feel like pests, there is no challenge and it gets really boring and repetitive.
What's worse is that your mecha can break and it requires you to use some premium currency to repair it. In old Hawken, there was a button you could press to repair, but you had to hide somewhere, because it made you completely vulnerable and you could be killed.
This is where PvP would have fitted really nicely with the PvE and making each separate so nobody feels forced to play a mode they don't feel comfortable playing. And then developers can look at statistics and see what mode is played more and dedicate more resources to refine it.
4. The way upgrading or building things works is a bit confusing, but from what I understood, it's a huge grind - you are forced to go through boring content just to kill the boring mobs in hopes to get random drops or see those resource nodes on the map and either step on them or shoot them in hopes to get something. That would've been OK, if the gameplay and the game in general was more engaging and fun, but it's just so boring.
5. The cash shop. I usually don't care about cash shops as I never waste money in them, ever, but it's not a good look when a game has just launched in early access with almost zero content and it already has a cash shop full of items that literally allow you to skip grind. Those things should be added in a game after it's been around for 3-4 years and it's past its prime and the developers no longer care what players will think of their game and the players who remain after 3-4 years also don't care anymore.
Overall, the experience for me was really boring. the graphics are OK, the build quality of the game is fine, I could play the game maxed out with zero performance issues, it's just that the game is so boring and repetitive and there is nothing to look forward to. If there was at least PvP, it would pump me up with adrenaline, excitement, some anxiety, some frustration, but at least it would invoke some emotions inside of me compared to what the current game offers - nothing, it invokes no emotion in me... unless utter and complete boredom is considered to be an emotion.
The game is not bad from a technical standpoint, it looks like a AAA game, but on the inside it feels like one giant NOTHING. That's why I was unable to enjoy the game and probably why others were unable to do so too. So don't act surprised, the game is far from good. 30% positive reviews is very accurate of what this game offers.
This should be a wake up call to the developers to take measures before it's too late, maybe they will and the game will get better, maybe they won't and ignore all feedback and the game will fail miserably.
great post. pretty much sums it up. I hope that people that play this hawken will have a good time, but I won't be amongst them
Perfectly happy with this remake, I've found plenty of PvP games since it came out and if you really loved the OG you could have still been playing with the private fan reconstruction like I was

Well good luck to you i guess, i will keep an eye on the PCU and see how quickly it drops off :)
Dude it's already dead stop kicking it.
Really though I didn't play as much Hawken as I did fresh out of highschool because of the great (re: boring) PVE mode it had. Hawken was put on my short list of "dead games that I would rather die playing" because it was cool mechs with an uncommon movement system and plenty of other smaller points that had me hooked completely. And I got to do it to other people. On maps that while I've forgotten the layouts, the visual feels are further burned into my mind than what I did with my family last weekend.
The devs already stated there's no intention on any actual PvP worth playing, so I'll twiddle my thumbs until Fractured Space gets its two minutes of resurrection.
