Why is safe cracking so hard?

I started up my old save today, and I am at the house at greenview 102. I am trying to crack the safe, but it seems really difficult for some reason. Did i miss something, or is it just really hard? Also, any tips with safes?

Try this
1. hold button direction (like arrow on screen)
2. sound change wave -> tap that button
3. number shows up and there is a loud sound -> press opposite direction button
4.repeat
